Fellas i recently bought a rifle chambered in 300 wsm, it's a new caliber to me, never shot anything in that caliber.
Any pro's and con's, is it comparable to the 300Win mag?
Which powders you find that work best for you?

I'm using 165GMX and MRP, down to my last 3lbs and not likely to be able to get any more. 70ish grains gives me 3000sps with a 19" barrel. Reloader 17,19 and 22 is what I'll be testing next.

Annealing brass is amust with mine to get any life out of them, but so was my 300winmg. My
M77 likes medium to light bullets.

It has in the last 10-12 years become my number 1 "go-to" cartridge. I have shot more animals (deer, bears, cougars & wolves) with my 300 WSM chambered A-Bolt than any other single rifle I own.

I am so happy with it's performance that it has taken the throne from my previous all-round cartridge the 30-06.

My main loading these days is a 168 grain Nosler E-Tip over a charge of W760. This yields just over 3000 fps and is accurate as hell in my rifle.

Win760 & IMR4350 worked great for 150-165gr bullets for me, win760 had a slight accuracy edge in my rifle. It's very close in performance with 300 win mag with light 150 gr bullets, the heavier the bullet the greater velocity difference between cartridges in favour of 300 win mag.

Reloder 22 works great with my 300wm and Reloder 17 seems to do alright for my 300wsm. Havent really done mucn experimenting. Ive heard that Reloder 26 works great if you can get your hands on soMe.

I use H4350 in mine with 180 NBT, ABs, and sometimes 165s. Getting the speeds up to 3000 proved easy enough, though they came in just a whisker above the starting loads. You might want to ease into it. Shoots like it has eyes.

Had another that wouldn't do much more than 2800 fps no matter what I did. Even tried pulling the trigger harder, didn't work.

Reloader 19 Barnes 150gr TTSX my go to load for the last 10 +years it plain and simple works and is very deadly , very accurate . Sheep , deer , elk + moose have yet to recover a bullet all one shot kills .

Have had several over the years & can't see wanting or needing anything else. I always use 180 bullets as there is little to gain with 165. RL17 is what I use and if not RL22. It's a little slower that the 300 mag by 100fps or so but it works for me. Without annealing split necks are common and I don't seem to get many reloadings without lose primer pockets.

Fellas by your accounts it seems to be easy to find an accurate load for this cartridge, you guys already mentioned at least half a dozen different powders that work well with this cartridge.
My intention is to use 180 grainers either in Accubonds or Partitions, i'm a bit of a sucker for heavy for caliber type a guy.
Dogleg have you tried a different trigger?
I was hoping to get 3000 fps or very close to it with 180 grainers.

I bought a xbolt pro in 300wsm 2 months ago and im very happy with it. I bought some fedral fusion 165 to get some brass and it shot pretty bad like 1.5moa so i loaded up some 180gn accubond behind 64.7gn of r17 and now im getting around .75moa and its moving fast 3100fps it kickes like a mule with the break off and i may run my next set of loads a bit lighter.

I use H4350 in the ones I’ve loaded for including my current one. 180 AB and 180 BT are solid choices for bonded bullets and the 165 TTSX for monos if you are strapped for magazine space and 168 TTSX if you can get to within 0.050” of the lands if you’re magazine allows it.

The 300 WSM was the cartridge I built my first custom rifle (lh Rem 700) on and it is an easy cartridge to shoot, and load for. Also very accurate in the various other rifles I have shot also chambered to the 300 WSM.
Had a 300 Win Mag once and just did not care for it. (the Magna-ported barrel could have had something to do with it)
I find the WSM to be easier on the shoulder, burns 10% less powder and gives the same performance. No animal will ever know the difference, while your shoulder will.
If I had to pair down to just one 30 cal cartridge, it would be hard not to choose the 300 WSM. It just works for me!
Have had great success on game from bears to elk with both the Winchester 180 gr Power Points and the Federal Premium 180 gr AccuBonds.
In handloads with the 180 gr AccuBonds, the older WXR 69.5 gr @ 2978 fps and just under 1/2 MOA and VN-165 70.0 gr @ 2970 fps and just over 1/2 MOA, with WLMR primers in Winchester cases. Have harvested more animals with the former handload, as I loaded up 200 rounds and am still using those. Still have 4 lbs of WXR on hand. A friend does very well with Re-17 in all of his WSM's.

I am at 62.0 grains of RL17 with 180 grain accubond and I feel it is max for my rifle. Have tried as high as 63.5 but had all kinds of pressure signs.

Max load of Vihtavuori N560 gives me great accuracy with 168gr Berger hunting...unsure of velocity as no chronograph.

When I started out with the 300 WSM I bought the Federal 180 Grain Power shock ammo where most hunts were one shot kills on moose and caribou... It seemed like this particular ammo was available in many places so I sighted in the rifle and was quite happy with them on my hunts of moose and caribou... Later on I went to the 180 grain Nosler Partitions and appreciated the results of one shot kills and will likely stay with those for now. I haven't shot it past 300 yards but at that distance i was rewarded with one shot kills. I think the Partition would be good out to 450 or 500 yards.

I have owned 2 - 300 WSM rifles, and both were stellar performers. Shot a moose at 375, one shot with a 180 Partition at just
barely over 3000fps MV. Sold one rifle to my BIL, and he is very happy with it. Sold the other to a friend, and he, too likes it a
lot.
Myself, being a 308 Norma Mag "nut", kept these, since I have so much in the way of components. The extra 100 fps the NM
gives with the 180 grainers is really inconsequential in the field. However, the NM handles the 200 grain bullets better. Dave.

Stock up on brass, this cartridge will be discontinued in a couple of years! Laugh2

Great cartridge, I've killed stuff using bullets from 130-180 gr and powders like Varget, H4350, Win 760, RL25, RL 26, H4831. Moose, deer, bear, wolf, coyote and grouse.
