300 wsm

I always thought the 7WSM was the best of the short mag family, but it seems to be dying a slow death. Not many rifles chambered in it that I see, and ammo is very slim pickings it seems. Oh well, thats why I am building a 280 Ackley.

Is 280AI ammo easier to get in S. Ont then the short mags?

I do, I have also fired a fired a rifle the same as what I have coming and with a limbsaver pad recoil wasn't an issue, I think that I should have waited a bit before I sold my 30-06, maybe should got a limbsaver for that one

So you thought the .300 WSM would have less recoil than a .30/06?
 
Had one in a BLR, great rifle just a little too much for deer imo. Was planning on using it more for moose but didn't get into it. It packed quite the wallop off the bench. Would want to shoot a box of shells through it one after the other lol.

the 700 in 30-06 I had would beat the hell out of me, the tikka t3 in 300 wsm with the limbsaver pad was very nice, I should put the same pad on my 06 but I jumped the gun and sold it

It could be the stock profile, but I wouldn't think there would be a significant difference in the fit of the M700 vs Tikka T3, unless it was a non-standard version. If you do start reloading, you can always tailor a load to your comfort level and usage.
 
It took me a while to warm up to the 300 WSM. With my first one (a Tikka) I couldn’t help noticing that it couldn’t hold a candle to a 300 Win so ended up selling it quick for a small profit. Shortly after that someone pointed out that I was going about it all wrong. Instead of comparing to a handloaded 300 Win, I should have compared it to a .308 since thats the one that would fit in a short action rifle. It’ll definitely eat a .308 alive.:) So I found a Kimber Select grade and its one of my favorite rifles. Isn’t rationalization great?

The 270 WSM was easier; it outdid the 270 Win considerably and fit a short action. There was actually a niche for that.

The 7mm WSM might even be the best of the bunch, but it fell into a vast field over-populated with 7s. I never really had a chance, from a market success point of view.
 
Between Barnes, Federal, Hornady, Nosler, Remington, and Winchester, there's 31 factory loads offered in 300 WSM

If we couldn't rationalize over split hairs we'd have nothing to talk about.
 
If you need more selection either order online or handload. I don't think the .300 WSM is going anywhere soon, however selection round here may be slightly lacking. Of course if you look at say Midway.COM based in the US or manufactures websites you will see that we don't get near the variety here north of the medicine line, even for very popular classics like the .223, .243, .308, .270, .30-30 and .30-06. If you're concerned once you find a load it likes order a case or 2, it is a moderate outlay and odds are ammo prices will only increase. How many loads do you need offered to satisfy? I know there are more offerings for the WSM than the British and odds are pretty good that any place that has .303 on its shelf probably has .300 WSM.

My LGS has Hornady 280AI factory ammo, and can get Nosler ammo in a few days if I want it. I think they also have some Federal blue box 7WSM, there was no logic in my decision to have a 280 AI built, it just tickled my fancy so that is what I went with. I have already bought 5 boxes of the Hornady, will give it a go but I do plan to reload for it too.
 
I have two, great calibre! Easy to load for. Jams?? what could you be doing wrong?
I have a 700 bolt and a SA, never had a jam, loads are over 3000fps, less recoil than a 300 RM, got rid of those, now they are almost obsolete
 
I’d sooner go with 280 ackley than a stubby fat cartridge that doesn’t feed as good. Or even a 300 win necked down to 7mm if ya want extra speed. The 280 ackley is a sweet 7mm offering
