I would appreciate some info and experiences with this cartridge particularly with regard to it's acciracy potential and long range performance using hand loaded ammo.

I got 3 shot groups in the 0.2" to 0.3" range with a 16.5" barreled Ruger Frontier in .300WSM running Speer Grand slams RL19 powder, in Winchester full length sized cases, with Winchester primers. Haven't run 5 shot groups but with this performance i imagine .75" 5-shot groups or better should be possible & maybe better with different bullets

In my opinion the short magnums are for the most part a marketing ploy. If your going to be a bear be a grizzley! If you want to shoot a magnum shoot a full magnum. Not saying im right here, but the short magnums out perform belted at a short range...reaching out a full sized belted takes over. For hunting short mags are probably great for the short ranges of most hunting situations, but for the precision shooter I say go large or go home!

Just an opinion.

Ya just had ta go and trash my latest rig, didn'tcha!
Methinks you may be re-evaluating the "go largew or go home" statement when you watch my 950T "drop 'em in there" at 500 and 1,000!:D

Sorry Cat: wasn't thinking about how you older fellers cant handle a real rifle anymore!!:p :p :p :D Of course I was talking about ballistic performance down range. not just velosity but energy at impact. No disrespect intended to those that like these cartridges, to each thier own and as I said I am no expert just voicing an opinion on what I believe to be true, but do not have the numbers beside me to verify. Cat you have that snazzy program if you run .300 win mag against .300 wsm which one do the stats say is the best performer over extended ranges ....never know, I may be wrong for once!!:p :p :D

Uh, LRC, I think it was Will Rodgers who said
" The first thing to do when you find yourself in a hole is quit diggin'"!
Wanna borrow a shovel?:D
BTW, You are on the list for the first annual "Outopst Of the Empire long range Invitational shoot" early next summer.
Events will be BPCR, TR, and unlimted.
BPCR is black powder cartridge ( of course!) shot off cross sticks.
TR is target rifle, DCRA legal for irons,
and unlimited is precision style, no weight , trigger or scope restrictions ,bipods or MPAL ( monkey phucking a log!:D ) only .
no rear bags or benchrests.
Fee is $30 each to cover gas for the boats , bring your own lunch.
Zeroing at daybreak till shooting begins at 10:00 hours.

ten shots on targets at 1,000 and 1mile each.
I am going to hit up the Fish and Game for trophies.
Ya up for that? (like I have to ask!)

Absolutely!!!:D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D I will even bring the shovel!!:p , If ya need anything else for the shoot let me know. Will do all I can to help. Johny Five may be interested. If your interested in getting a few rounds down range at extended distances before the river breaks let me know, I was thinking of heading to that southern location I sent ya pics of to strech the legs on "Puff" (pet name for new baby).

Johnny5 is also on the short list.

I am planning a quad/snowmobile run up the river to the Outpost this winter as well.
The river is not safe this winter IMHO, but the going is good on the shore because of the lack of snow and ice build up this year.

Nothing else is needed unless you want to bring a tent and camp out the evening before..
Two boats at least, maybe 4 will be involved, so logistics shouldn't be a problem.
I have own of those tent-like gazebos that I bought from Canadian tire for the Outpost where we can keep the gear in case of incliment weather .
I'm hittin' the ranges this Friday and saturday for some 500 yard stuff if yer interested....

To get back on topic this is a portion of an article from guns and ammo, Take from It what you will. I don't think the .300wsm is the best as a "Precision" round or caliber, due to Its limitations over the .300win mag. This being said it comes down to how far do you want to take this round. If you are going 800 + yrds in my opinion you are far better off with the .300 win mag.

The .300 Winchester Short Magnum has been with us for about three years now. In that time hundreds of thousands of words of copy have filled gun and hunting magazines to the brim. Guns & Ammo published its first set of loads for the .300 WSM in December 2001.

At that time I said that it was going to take three or four years to determine if the cartridge was going to be popular. As of the time of this writing, the factory cartridge listings show four loadings from Winchester: a 150-grain and 180-grain Ballistic Silvertip at 3,300 fps and 3,010, respectively; a 180-grain Fail Safe at 2,970 fps; and a 180-grain Power-Point at 2,970. Federal Cartridge Company also offers several options in this caliber.

But I haven't heard of many shooters throwing away their .300 Winchester Mags or, for that matter, their .30-06s to go out and buy a .300 WSM, though that doesn't mean a few haven't made the switch. Still, it's early, and I think the jury has yet to return a verdict on the ultimate popularity of this cartridge. That isn't because the .300 WSM doesn't perform well but rather that its performance falls too closely between two other excellent calibers.

The light and heavy bullets are included here mostly to show the .300 WSM's performance limits. These loads were carefully selected to avoid duplicating the loads developed when I first covered the .300 WSM. One thing worth noting is that simply changing the brand of bullet sometimes makes a significant difference in what constitutes a maximum load. So take a warning from that.

BULLET AVAILABILITY
Barnes 110-gr., 125-gr., 140-gr., 150-gr., 165-gr., 180-gr., 200-gr., 220-gr.*, 250-gr.*
Hornady 110-gr., 130-gr., 150-gr., 165-gr., 168-gr., 180-gr., 190-gr*., 220-gr.*
Nosler 125-gr., 150-gr., 165-gr., 180-gr., 200-gr.*, 220-gr*.
Sierra 110-gr., 125-gr., 150-gr., 155-gr., 165-gr., 168-gr., 175-gr., 180-gr., 190-gr.*, 200-gr.*, 220-gr.*, 240-gr.*
Speer 100-gr., 110-gr., 125-gr., 130-gr., 150-gr., 165-gr., 168-gr., 180-gr., 200-gr.*
Swift 150-gr., 165-gr., 180-gr., 200-gr*
*These bullets are not especially suitable for the .300 WSM

In order to allow the .300 WSM to fit into .308-length actions, the overall length needs to be no more than 2.810 inches. That creates a couple of problems for the handloader. The first of these is that with bullets at the heavy end of the list--the 220 grainers, for instance--you have to push the bullet deeply into the case, which uses up a bunch of internal volume and severely restricts potential performance. Bullets weighing more than 180 grains aren't a particularly good choice in the .300 WSM except for some very special-purpose loads.

The second problem with the short configuration is that the cannelure grooves on a number of bullet designs are too far back on the bullet to match up with the mouth of the .300 WSM case. If you want to use a cannelured bullet, you can go ahead and seat the bullet to the OAL and simply treat it as an uncannelured bullet. Or you could trim a little off the case mouth so that the case mouth and cannelure match up when the overall length is correct. But I don't think that's a very good idea when dealing with a neck that's short to begin with.

This guy obvioulsy does not know everything about the 300 WSM.
He will likely say the 7WSM is not a s good as the 7mmMag. either.

Cannelures? fogetabout 'em!
Never worried about them them on any other cartridge, why should I worry about them on .... WAITAMINIT!!
I DON"T LOAD any bullets with cannelures!!:D

The danged rifle was built for precision shooting, what else would wear a 20X Unertl and a Palma style stock with iron sighted options??!!

catnthehatt re-educated me on this cartridge today at the range.........have to turn in the shovel and have to say this cartridge Rocks and will do the job at a precision shoot. I hate being proven wrong. But I would still choose .300 win mag over the short!!:D but personal choice. Try them both and go with whatever fits ya best.
