300 wsm

Will take anything in north america. One of the wsm that will last the most.if you can handle the recoil a really good choice. Not that is real bad but not for the real beginner.
I used to begin with a 270 ,after a 7rem mag and so. So the 300 wsm wasn't a big deal for me but for you?

While the cartridge is a fine one for many things, I would never consider getting one as a coyote rifle. There are just way too many better choices.

I've played around with the 300 at the range a fair bit. I would say it is a very good all around cartridge but it really is not any better than a 300 win mag.

As for a coyote gun it would be a little better in terms of wind drift than the lighter .22 cal rounds but it really is way overkill. If I was looking for a coyote to moose rifle all in one package I'd probably go with a good old 270 win.

Put it in a Browning BAR Shorttrac Stalker and I think it is as good as it gets for an all around cartridge. I find the recoil a little unpleasant in other actions.

This is a picture of a coyote I took this past Sunday with my 300WSM. Not real pelt friendly but gets the job done.

Nice pic, Shortaction.

idbltap, The 300 WSM is a short action 300 Win Mag. Would you go coyote hunting with a 300 Win Mag? Most people wouldn't. You may want to. Your choice. Some people hunt whitetails with a 375 H&H. Not my choice, but hey, whatever.

The 30-06 is a good standard to start at in terms of performance and capability with the 30 cal bullets. Do you want your bullet to travel another 150-200 fps faster? Then get a 300 Win Mag. Do you want that same speed, but in a short action? Then get a 300 WSM.

I have a 300 WSM and I like the round, but it is nothing new, in terms of ballistics. It does what the 300 Win Mag does. It just does it from a short action platform.

So if you think coyote hunting with a 300 Win Mag is a good idea, but you want to do it with a short action, then the 300 WSM is what you need.

They are a good all around gun. I bought one a few years ago, and it has served me well. I have shot a few animals with it and have had good results with "cheap" factory ammo. I think there are better choices for harvesting fur, but if thats not a concern for you then I say go for it, shoot it and enjoy.

I've had the chance to shoot my friends 300wsm often. I'm just not that impressed with it. As others have stated it's the same as the 300 winmag. Imho....it's more power than most need. I'll take my 270 win over it any day. Also, it's VERY loud.......so if noise is a concern......

If you want a great cartridge for mice to moose you should look into a .270 WSM. Load it with 110 grain Vmaxs and you got a stupid flat, lightning fast yote vapourizor. Load it with 130 accubonds or ballistic tips and you got a super flat deer stomper. Load it with 140 TSX's and you have a bone breaking moose masher. All with a recoil that most anyone can tame....now what'd I do with that 270 WSM of mine again...hmmm.

IMHO 300WSM is an overkill for coyote.

My go to coyote rifle is a 223 (55 gr VMAX). I have taken a 270 (130 gr Hornady SP) out a few times as well.

Being in southern Ontario I would prefer to be within the law of .275 caliber and as I owe 270WSM and 300 Win Mag ,those will cover from moose to mice , there are a slight chance I would spend any more money . But that's just me - Biggs

figure just right to get the job done ...

with most hobbies cost is a consideration, 300 wsm bullets vs 223 (about three times as much). A 223 is a very popular yote cartridge and gets the job done at 1/3 the cost ...

Not to mention more enjoyable to shoot (less recoil)

my thoughts ....
