300BLK Build Begins - And Ends

Looks good, congrats! I had some odds 'n ends from True North Arms too and like you said - good to deal with and would do so again.

Thanks!

I wish the thread protector was a little narrower, but I intend to switch it out down the road anyways. Called the local smith today to ask about checking headspace and he just kind of said "Well, if it's a semi auto you can't change it anyways." and to be honest didn't seem to think it was worth checking it. So I'm thinking as long as it will close on the round I'll just run it and see how it goes. BCG arrived minutes ago, so I should be go to go this weekend :)

Arms East shipping was incredible. Have the BCG in my hands in 24 hours, that's impressive.

waiting for an upper receiver to finish my 300 blk build. Will be using my current lower for now until I get another lower put together.

I'm doing the same with my lower. Don't know I'll ever bother to get a lower for it, I kind of like the idea of having a bunch of different uppers for my CC lower and just switching them out as the mood strikes me.

Thanks!

Same as what I've been told. As long as you don't use a Norinco receiver or barrel don't worry about it. It's not adjustable and a lot of guys think that since you have to check it on a bolt action build you have to check it on every rifle you put together. If you have access to the gauges go for it but if not don't worry about it.

I took the BCG into work today, and pulled it apart to apply some lubrication. Got home and took the firing pin out of it to see if it would chamber and cycle rounds. Seems to be good so hopefully the weather will cooperate on Friday :)

Looking forward to hearing your results, best of luck with the weather!

Apparently it's supposed to hold out, but obviously time will tell. I'm not reloading yet, but luckily my LGS usually has a couple boxes of 300 blk in stock.

Well, according to the liars, errrrrr.... good people at the weather network and environment Canada. It supposed to be 16 and sunny tomorrow afternoon. So it looks like I should be good to go tomorrow barring unforeseen circumstances. Probably slap my iur's spitfire on it so I'm not shooting 10 feet over the target, lol.

Well, because I had no sights on the gun at all, and that the break in procedure (shoot 5 then clean x4) is eye wateringly boring, I only put 20 rounds through it. BUT everything ran exactly as it should. I realize this doesn't sound exciting as it's supposed to run properly, but I've never built an upper before so for the TNA brand gas block/tube, NEA barrel, Noveske upper, Stag Arms BCG, and Spike's T2 buffer that's already on my pre-existing lower to all be working in synergy makes me a very happy camper.

On an assembly note, I put my upper together with the help of a co-worker as he'd previously done one himself. I had a NEA barrel on mine, when he built his he used a Rainier Arms match barrel. On my NEA barrel the pin in the receiver extension was dead straight lined up with the gas port on the barrel. On his significantly more expensive barrel this was not the case and not only made installation a bit more challenging but also means that his gas block is forever installed on an angle where mine is nice and straight. Not a big deal, but NEA catches a lot of crap on here for their quality and in the case of their barrels I have no complaints at all.

Who breaks in an AR barrel or any barrel for that matter? Don't waste your time, just shoot it... lots!

Your buddy should have contacted the retailer where he bought that Rainier barrel. I know I would have sent it back if it was misaligned. That said, your buddy can add a slight bend to the gas tube so that it is straight when it enters the upper to avoid it potentially binding up with the BC gas key.

Hey "boring" is good when you're shooting a newly built (and first one at that) rifle for the first time! Don't be wantin' no excitement at that stage :D

Granted I don't plan to shoot the wings off of flies with a .300blk AR but I was trying to start it off on the right foot by following the recommendations as to make sure it would maintain it's accuracy over the life of the barrel. I found it interesting that the barrel took less effort to clean after each subsequent magazine.

Good call on the gas tube, I'll let my friend know about it.

Very true.

Ordered some reloading dies while I was at the range too. Now that I know it runs properly I'll check and make sure the gas block and handguard bolts haven't walked themselves loose. What's the consensus around these parts about using loctite (blue) on the gas block to make sure the screws (and in turn the gas block) stay where they need to?

Hey Bill, how far are we from a range report on yours?

The remaining parts (barrel, stock, misc small bits) scheduled to arrive Tuesday. But it'll be at least a couple more weeks waiting on my handguard being cerakoted at Black Box Customs. But I'll get the lower built and ready to go next week anyway. Small steps and patience is a virtue they say LOL...

Have you tried calling them and telling them to hurry up?

By the way, picking up your 300 blk brass at the range is the strangest thing ever. It looks like a long pistol casing.

They've been great to talk to actually, they're just really busy, so I'm fine with that. And I have a few range toys to play with in the interim :) .

I don't harass people till they're past the day they told me it should be ready by either. I have other toys to play with and calling them just takes them away from the work.

Buy yourself a brass catcher, I bought one and a bunch of the mounts so I can use it on all my semi's.
I have the 3 Bucc brass catcher, it works really well but I don't know who carries them in Canada anymore.

Been meaning to pick up something like that as the Tavor slings 'em a mile, thanks for the link.... P.S. gotta love the price differences lol *sigh*

Ya, just don't look at the US price. Just buy it with a bunch of extra mounts so you can use it on a few rifles. I think i have four or five mounts, not as good on my M14's or AR180B with the reciprocating charge handle but it can still work and it works great on the AR's, ACR, and Modern Hunter.
