hey guys i been goin thru the youth thread, got me goin over some calibres and theres a few contenders..

6.5grendel.. .223 ... 7.62x39... 300blk.....

ideally a howa mini or ruger ranch with the shorter 16-18 barrel......... so may rule out the grendel for now, (down the track though it may be the one)

so just curious to talk 300blk for deer, Does, 100m an not much further, lung shots....... V say our current .222 55gr zmax load....

V the 7.62x39 for 150m under deer hunting.

an is the .223 short tube worth lookin at considering we do have a .222 already.. (idea is his own small gun) eventually.

much help thanks

For deer, the Grendel is likely the best performer, followed by the 7.62x39, followed by the .300 Blackout. The .223 for deer is no contender. Factoring in ammo availability, the 7.62x39 was what I chose in a CZ 527, but the American Ranch or Howa Mini are fine rifles.

Below is a link to a great article (remove the space in https). Also, I have some real world experience with .300blk. Federal Fusion 150g. Inside 150yds and knowing your trajectories, you are good to go for deer. Significantly less recoil than .308 for instance. Great for youth.

How about some 120gr pro hunters or nosler ballistic tips in Kimberly? Loaded to a modest velocity of course. His arms long enough yet?

i tried some of those admitedly full house loads, tough gig to get it out of my hands lol.. hence why i want his own dedicated little gun, havin a short barrel myself now, i want his to be shorter than 20 say. ranch an mini work an the cz to boot.... might of even seen zastava!

Thanks for the infos above on the cartridge option for the deers- il check the link for sure an get back to yas

For deer and smaller a 300blk using 110gr ammo is perfect for up to 150 yards. Barnes makes a 110 and 120 gr specifically for the 300blk that is the gold standard for hogs and deer in the US. 223 depends on where you live here in Alberta its illegal to use a 223 to hunt deer but in the US its used all the time. Grendel is another good choice but I wouldn't use it for deer past 200 yards like the 300blk I shot my first deer at 12 using a 6mm its a perfect caliber for deer and low recoil the .243/6mm is great for deer

You can get the short 16” Ruger and the mini in 6.5 Grendel. At least you can here maybe there’s different offerings down under. What about one of the new 18” savage 110 tacticals in 6mm ARC?

The only marginal cartridge on the list is .223. With an accurate gun, good shooter and decent bullet I consider it fine but those qualities may not all be present. The other three are all adequate under 200m, maybe a bit more with the right load and/or gun.

Also the accufit stock on the 110s have adjustable length of pull so it can grow with him.

Grendel for the win!

No mention of a .243.....that would be my choice for a young fella. Ammo usually readily available.

i think this is where we will end up shortly in a few years
i believe a stout 100gr projectile in .243 will take our big deer with ease, big deer not on his menu for a few years :)

just having some fun;19121900]if you are having supply issues = 300 aac Black

Convert 223 brass
small rifle / srm primers

Bullets for 30-30 150-170 etc or you can do cast 180-247g

That is a real advantage i also didnt think of------- yeah great points!!!

i also have quite alot of 130gr ppsn woodleighs,....... i rekon that is a deadly combo in the blk for even our big deer... Dad will have test that out..

Savage sells axis in 6mm arc. Might be something to think about with bullet availability.

350 legend is an option too; though I don’t know how common .357 bullets are down under? Pretty decent performance at short ranges according to the book

I used 300BLKOUT to teach both of my sons centrefire rifle accuracy, and then went on to use the same for deer. 90% of the deer are encountered in light bush under 100 metres, and a 110 - 125 grain round does the job with minimal recoil.

I really like this round, but it runs out of legs over 150 metres I find, which has meant some lost opportunities when hunting.

I reload, and have done the chop saw of 223 into 300BLKOUT, but brass is not that hard to find, and not a problem when you buy a couple of 1,000.

Candocad.
