They do expand. I have shot many deer with them and the exit hole is always the size of a 2 Litre pop bottle. If you hit bone the deer look like they have been hit by a large truck.

Match bullets are not designed to kill big game. However, if you are in the long range shooting game, you need a bullet that is accurate enough to hit the target at extended ranges, and the 300 gr .338 has enough mass that even if it goes to pieces, most species of big game will be killed by it. Berger claims to offer the best of both worlds, perhaps they are worth a look. If you are not shooting beyond 500 yards, IMHO a good game bullet is a better choice than either.
Ya I read that too but guys are using them for hunting, and I wanted some opinions from people that have.

haha I agree! however it was denting my ar-400 so I decided I would rather wreck cheap mild plate then dent up my expensive abrasion resistant plate.
Thats interesting to see that they can go into pieces! what was that recovered from?
I could chuck some up on my lathe and make bigger hollow points for you.... but who knows how they would perform???? or fly for that matter.
I've never seen one not expand in fact everything I have seen has looked like a bomb went off.
I do think there are better and more performance consistent selections.
Go over to longrangehunting and do a few searches.
You will find a lot of guys using that bullet.
There are a few very experienced guys that have shot game at some pretty insane ranges with the 300SMk, but some of the same guys admit to having issues and have switched.
Some of those guys are running the 225Accubond...As am I.
Currently there is nothing else that come close for use out to about 800 yards that also works on large game at 20 feet. The SMK is more accurate, but (as mentioned earlier) it has its issues.
When Berger gets their 300 figured out it should be a good (albeit explosive) choice.

I was a little nervous when I shot my 1/2" AR500 plate at 500 the first time. I hadn't really anticipated shooting that close with the .338 Edge, but have it up for smaller calibers. A .223 is difficult to see hits, a .308 a little easier if you watch close, a .300 rocks it back about a foot on the chains, and the Edge smacks it, rips the rebar stand out of the ground and flattens it every time. Nothing makes so much as a dimple on the plate at that distance.
My other gongs are mostly scrap of Kramer tractors junk pile, buggy cutting edge and some unknown hard plate. They don't mark either.

These bullets have been in use for at least a decade taking very large game at distances I will not even bother to print.
The SMK"s have a solid track record. The Lapua Scenars have been reported to rivet and bend. The bergers and amax also have a following.
Not all match bullets are made the same so you may want to check with those that HAVE shot these and harvested big grass eaters.
