300win mag vs 300 rem ultramag

I'm no sheep expert that is Ackley's domain... but I would think that anchoring one to the mountian is important when choosing your rifle and bullet. Watching your Ram bounce down a half a mile of rock face would really suck!
I can see where too much energy would likely have the opposite effect to adequate energy.... maybe actually knock the Ram off the ledge? I have seen 250 pound animals lifted off their feet and pushed several yards using extreme energy (50 cal M/L and Slugs). ;) JBRO

for sheep, anything from 257 Roberts on up to 30-06 would be my pick, using medium weight bullets

sheep country is grizzly country though, so alot of guys use 338s

.300 Win Mag is the way to go, if you are set on one of the two. I don't think the "advantage" of the RUM would make any difference on sheep (like Gatehouse said). Folks like Rick of Alberta Tactical Rifle use the .300 WM on game out to ranges where the average person couldn't hit a sheet of plywood. Why would you need more than the .300 WM offers?

back to .280 - are you sure you copied that .280 AI load right? My Nosler #4 gives a max load of 60.5gr of RL22 with the 140gr.

I like the 7mm RMag myself, But that being said I have ordered in my savage in 300WM, do I need another rifle not really but the price on those savages is just too good to pass up, and the range reports posted here just don't help convince me that the savages are not good rifles. (and I had to spend those $400 bucks from Ralph)

So I decided to get a 300WM, ammo is easier to find and cheaper, I do reload my own but I like to have the option to buy more if I need to. 300RUM you never know if or when they might discontinue it then your in a pickle for getting ammo / brass for reloading. And I had to ask myself how often do I shoot over 300yds, rare occasions only, and mostly at yotes, so the 7mm I have is just fine for longer ranges, and the 25-06 is better on yotes anyways.

Ok enough rambling, just go and get a 300WM

I have both the 300win and the 300 RUM. after i bought the RUM the win hasnt been used for anything but gopher hunting...(i had 100 rounds of 110grn V-max loaded up). My Rum is 3/4 lb heavier than the other but i dont find it troublesome to carry. It does have fairly heavy recoil but it doesnt bother me, just the rings. I put burris rings on it now and it holds good. I use 200 grain partition bullets and there is a definite difference in killing power on large deer at longer range compared to the 180 grn partitions i prefered in the win mag.
It weighs just over 7 lbs plus a 10x40 tactical 3200 scope and a bipod, not too heavy to carry. remember 2 inches of stainless pipe dont weigh that much
As far as comparing it to my 25-06......it might see daylight again if i get drawn for antelope this year.
As far as sheep go, ive never had the chance :( . im guessing they would be more like antelope than a big mulie. if i ever get the chance to go it will be my RUM tagging along. I dont trust bears

.300 Win Mag or...?

Todd Bartell where the heck do you get those avatar pics--are they your neighbors?? Nice part of town, Hahaha.

Why would anyone want .300 mag for anything smaller than moose? I like .300 WM because there's more versatility in the range of factory loads available and it's a flat-shooting rifle with excellent knock-down power at some pretty extended ranges. The .300 WM has been around for a while and will certainly be for some time to come. That's my choice.

Don't have my manual handy, but pretty sure it is correct. Nosler #4 was a POS w/regards to 280AI data. They changed nearly all the loads with #5 (actually bought a pressure bbl I'm guessing).
