300winmag in Iraq?

If you are talking the sniper game yes, I would say that this would be an intermediate distance round, 0-1000m. Usually the .308 is the close range round and the .50 cal the long range round. Some military communities are using the .338 Lapua and others of course.

Within 1000m is still 308 range. Some people shoot it out to 1400m ( punching paper of course ) 300 win mag I say is good to around 1500m.

Diddn't Carlos Hathcock shoot a VC at a range of what was it around 1100m or yards with a 308 winchester 70?

The US military issued mostly 308s but some of us were issued 300 win mags later in the 60s for service in Vietnam, the caliber is still in use as an intermediate sniper rifle caliber, 308 still being the main sniper rifle caliber choice for ammo logistical reasons. The effective range is pretty much considered limited to 1000 yards but a few have pushed the envelope a bit further, 308 is seldom used in sniping operations for use beyond 800 yards as the velocity and energy are less than what is generally considered adequate for the mission, again there are a few who have pushed the envelope here as well.
I find it interesting to see todays troops still finding that OLD tech works best, there have been many film clips of troops in Iraq where that ain't no Beretta on the hip. Many M14s have also seen service despite being deemed to heavy for todays warfare.
Personally I would prefer the 300 and 45 combo to 223 and 9

Carlos also won the 1965 Wimbledon Cup at Camp Perry with a .300 Winchester, so the US military has had interst in the round for quite some time. I believe US sniper rifles (M-24's) are built on long actions so they can be chambered for either .308 or .300 - perhaps other folks have more information in this regard.

Carlos Hathcock

I believe Carlos Hathcock was using a Model 70 in .30-06.
You are right, Dustin. Ever read the book Whitefeather? Others had higher kill counts but they were not the stalker he was. The only probably better was the Russian sniper in Stalingrad with an issue Mosin Nagant, the same one used by the Snake that Carlos wacked right thru his scope tube, iron nerves! Alex.

Hey Boomer.

I believe that Carlos used a 300 win mag case but necked it down to 7mm to win at Camp Perry.
From the book that I read.

I do know that the Armys M24 system is a long action to accommodate the 300 win mag but don't know if they have but the 300 in action. I guess it would make sense to use the 300win in that envirornment not alot of cover in the sand.

the m-24 is a long action so it could run 300 win mags but none of the rifles are currently chambered for 300.

I read somwhere i cant rember quite where and what teh ranges were but i think the US army rated the 308 to a range of 700 yards and the marries800 yards for effective use. IT will certainly shoot farthure but higher caliber rounds are recomended for those longer shots.
