300wm and 338wm

OP... now that you have listed your .270 in the EE, you will have to ask a different question... the answer will still be .300 WM though.

i like both, but as I had said earlier .338 is my favourite. I bought an M70 sporter a few years back, the year Winchester re-introduced. It is a great gun, bought it for elk which have so far eluded me, but have shot a moose and many deer with it. Perhaps if you cannot decide you should go wildcat and get a .338- 300 made :)

Just made the same type of decision. Have a 7mm R.E.M. Mag and gave my son my browning 300 win mag and needed to fill the gap. The 338 win mag won the choice and am just doing barrel break in and working up loads. My buddy loves his.

The 300WM is the 30-06 of magnums...
Take the step up to 338. You'll be glad you did.

With new bullets available for the 7mm, at 175 grains, there really is no requirement for the 300, which means that the 338 with 225's fills that gap, the best.

And selling the 270 was, of course, the very first step in the right direction!!!

Given the choice, I would lean toward the 338. This is not because I think it is any better but because I like it better. I figure, if you are going to step up from the 270, you may as well make it a significant step.
Regarding the Kraft Dinner, I have a couple of stories but will refrain from derailing the thread.

The .300 will kill anything dead on the continent.

So would macaroni...

Get both and problem solved, sort of. For big game in BC, a .270, .30-06, .300WM, .338-06 & .338WM are in my vault. Lately, it's the .300WM that usually gets out. It's a Rem 700 WoodTech with a Vortex Diamondback HP on top. It's a real pussycat from the bench with that R3 recoil pad. Totally unlike the old Ruger 77 .300WM wood stock, tang safety I had that kicked like the proverbial mule, lol.

What ever the 300 does, the 7mm will do better, ballistics wise, every time, and with way more style!!!
The 338 simply brings the mail, hard.

Really racking my brain on a step up from a .270win for a go to elk moose and black bear rifle, between the 300win mag and 338 win mag.

Not that the 270win isn't capable... just more toys are better. I have a 270 win rem700 Mountain SS that shoots the lights out with 150 gr projectiles....and very confident with it.

Experience with both mentioned would be great. Thx.
I have a mountain ss in .280 and like yourself I love mine! As well I have a .300wm in a Weatherby Vanguard, have only shot one elk with it with a 180gr Hornady bullet elk took two steps and went down.

OP is about 300 WM vs. 338 WM.

yea, but you lose 2 rounds and burn almost 2x the powder of the 308 for just a gain in VELOCITY- you increase the mpbr by about 50 yards of so- maximum point blank range- 267 vs 325- not a really great deal given the powder expended given both using 180 grain slugs- now the 338 is in an whole other ballpark if you don't handicap it by using bullets of less than 250 grains or round nose bullets
