not even that much- mpbr for the 06 is 275 yards with the 180 grain, the 300 is 325- and mpbr is what counts in my book- personally i use a 308 for MOST things, ( 267 yards) wich i can fudge into either 250 or 275, and still be good to go- but 44 grains vs 54grains of an "ordinary powder ' which i can use in a bunch of other guns vs 75 grains or better of a slow burning specialized powder is what kills the magnums for me- unless it's REALLY necessary- plus you give up 2 rounds

One of my .308s holds 4, 1 less than my Kimber .338. So if it's a capacity race my .375 thats holds 7 must win?
If you like MPBR why not shoot an STW? We've been happily holding dead on out to 400 yards for over 20 years now, and still holding on hair to 500. You can still deliver a ton of energy to 500 too.

b/c stw is a round you can't buy just anywhere- and you can't beat my 99 in a saddle scabbard- bolt actions on horseback just plain 'LOOK FUNNY"- they don't belong there like a lever
I think it would be hard to differentiate between 200's in a 300 and 250's in a 338 if the same quality bullet is used.

I know most folks prefer the .300 to the .338 for long range work, but I really do like the .338 WM. It throws a hefty bullet out there with good energy and momentum. How often do folks shoot out past 500 yards? And I'm not talking about hail mary shots.
Folks who do that kind of shooting regularly often have the proper optics and know their rifles inside and out. Will a couple of inches of extra drop, which equates to a few more clicks on the turret make much difference to that marksman?

a "real" bullet in a 300 is commonly 200-220- the "real " bullet for the 338 is NOT the 250 or less that EVERYBODY and his dog loads- the real bullet for the 338 is a 275- which is ONLY 45 fps behind the 250 but hits a whole lot harder- but they don't make it anymore

t-star. FWIW Swift still makes 275 grain 338 A Frames. I just bought a box not too long ago.
Yes, slightly lighter bullet, slightly lower velocity and smaller diameter = "light".
BTW, I suspect you are quoting 2615fps from the old Speer manual using MRP. Have you ever chronographed that load? I have one 275gr SS sitting in my reloading kit - it was a great bullet.
I used 275 grain 338's and I found them to work no better than a 250...Tried them in my 340 too...no diff. I tried the Speer and the Swift. The 275 Swift expands like a silver dollar and is ten times the bullet of the old Speer.
Swift still makes the 275 if you really want it.
You do give up a lot of versatility and IMHO the 338Win is at its best with the 225gr TSX...To each their own.
The 30 cal mags work very well...Not much less well that the 338Win...At least in my experience.
30 mags are great killing machines when loaded with good bullets. I sorta look at them as ultimate Deer guns. Don't get your panties in a bunch, I know they kill big stuff too. I've gone to the STW for long range stuff and 338 for all around. I'm shooting the TTSX in 225 gr., very accurate bullet. I've got two full boxes of 275 Speers if someone wants to trade something interesting.
i still have a full box- 50 rounds, and yes, i have, but i think the choro must be wacky as i come with 55 MORE fps than what the speer manual calls for- but my barrel is 4 inches longer- and with a break- and that's 70 grains of imr 7828- we all know every rifle is different, and that's what mine likes
Deer and moose? Flip a coin. Both will kill very well, with little noticeable difference. If you were hunitng grizzly bears I'd likely give the nod to the .338, just for the sake of convention.
