So I've just started reloading for my .300 and I could use some advice. I have some Hornady 168g hpbt and I have two powders to choose from: H414 and IMR4831. Anyone have experience with these components? Can I expect to hit a target at 5-600 yards assuming I can shoot that well? I also have some 180g nosler partitions that I want to use for hunting at a maximum of 300 yards. Any advice?

Good results with Reloder19 (similar burn rate to IMR4831) and 180gr T-TSX bullets in my Sako 85 Grey Wolf .300 Win. Mag. -

What do you expect is going to happen at 500 yds, the bullet fall out of the sky? A 300WM is capable to at least a mile if not further.

I have no expectations because it's new to me, you have any other pearls of wisdom regarding what I'm trying to learn or do you only offer snarky remarks?

So I shouldn't bother doing some research and getting advice from people who know then. Why even bother commenting if you're just going to be a prick? I don't need any stupid advice, if I do I'll just pm you directly.

I think if you have a search of this forum you will find a number of posts on this subject, with a lot of useful observations on reloading 300WinMag.

It would also be worth you having a read on one of the 'foundation stone' books like teh ABC of Reloading to help with setting up the tests when you shoot these reloaded rounds. I have been reloading for about 10 years now and I still refer back to some basic books for assistance.

I hope the reloading goes well.

I think some get house bound and moody ( I know I do ) but from what I've researched the 4831 is the one to go with but I've had 3 different 300 win mags and they all fine tune different for different components so try and experiment with both powders
Bullets have different results to mine all liked heavy bullets (180-200)
The nosler bullet has worked very well to 300 with all as far as hunting acurracy goes , and they are proven performers for taking game hard to beat IMO

If you had actually done some research you wouldn't have posted here. Google is your friend. And FWIW asking questions ain't research, its just asking other people to do the work for you. The primary problem with asking for advice here is you never know who is answering or what they know.

Its like the internet has made us entirely unable to find out stuff for ourselves. All this information at our fingertips and still asking dumb questions.

Oh and if suggesting you do the work and learn stuff yourself is "being a prick" then yes I am being a prick. This isn't school where you get a participation medal and endless praise no matter how badly you do.

Wtf is your problem? If you have nothing constructive to add to the conversation, mind your own business. Who are you to decide how someone should research something? I don't need you or anybody else to hold my hand and I don't need to explain my reasoning to some second rate Internet troll with nothing better to do. Thanks to everyone else who offered advice, I appreciate it.

For the record I based my response on this:
http://www.hodgdonreloading.com/data/rifle

I double check what I can with my hornady reloading manual, but I don't think I've ever been steered wrong by the hogdon reloading charts. Both powders look to give similar results, but H414 using less grains (meaning more reloads!). If you wanted to shoot 1" groups at a mile I think you would want to get much more specific with bullets, quality, and quantities, but 66 grains on that bullet should give you ~2900 fps and 48,000 CUP.

The 300 win mag is a great mid to long range cartridge , the 168 to 180 gr class pills will get you out to your desired range easily.
If it was me & I had to choose between those 2 powder's I think I would be looking at the 4831 a little more so than the faster 414 powder.
With the 168gr pill's maybe try between 70.0 to 74.0 gr's of IMR-4831 and with the 180;s I would try between 69.0 and 73.0gr of the 4831.
But this is only my 2cent's, please work up your load slowly & watch for pressure sign's. I have about 30 years of proven result's with the 300 win mag, & would be more than happy to help you out or share any experience that I have. One thing to add is that the 300 wm like's slower burning powder's lit up with a magnum primer.

Cheer's & please keep us up-dated.

Neck re-sizing your cases is recommended rather than full length re-sizing (unless your rifle is an autoloader). Improved accuracy and it's easier on your brass. I have a Redding deluxe die set that includes a neck sizing die.

The muzzle blast of a .300 Win. Mag. is something to behold.

One of the best performing powders with your chosen bullet weights is IMR 7828, however of the two powders you list IMR 4831 is far better in the 300 WM than H414. Your 180 Partition is an outstanding bullet in the 300 WM for all around use.

Bryan Litz has a free article on his Applied Ballistics website (google it for the link) that compares the .300 WM to the .338 Lapua Mag and suggests one of the heavier Berger OTM bullets (unsurprisingly as he is their Chief Ballistician) can approach the .338 in terms of downrange performance!

Haven't tried this projectile yet in my R700 in .300 WM but it's on the project list for sure!
