I'm thinking of buy a Browning X-Blot White Gold Medallion and I want it in short action but I don't want to go below 30.06 performance ( 30.06 is my favorite caliber ) so the logical choice would be 300wsm,.... But I don't need all the power that the 300wsm provides,..so my question is do any of you reloaders of the 300wsm down load it to 30.06, or 308 performance?

Whats wrong with a long action? The short is better for scope mounting but thats about it in my book and nothing you cant get around. Id get the cartridge i want and the action to fit.

Ya I know,..lol,...there is nothing wrong with long action but I already have a A-BOLT Medallion in 30.06,....and I know the 308 is a great round also and I plan to buy one in an X-Bolt Stalker for bad weather hunting and I already have a oil finish Shorttrac in 7mm-08 and a BLR in 358,..plus many more,...so now you can see why I am looking at a 300wsm,...I like collecting Brownings, I have 9 so far. Remember This place is called GUNNUTZ, lol.

I was just curious as to what the posibilities are with it.

I hear ya;) Cant help out with loads though, never shot the 300. I do have an A-Bolt in .270 WSM though you should give that round a try. May be easier to load it down to .30-06 performance.

I use a 300 Win Mag (same performance as Short Mag) and download to 30-06 most of the time. I keep the heavy loads(180 gr Noslers) if I go for moose but when I'm out for deer I load with 165's and keep it down to '06 velocities. I like the versatility of the 300 WM, no need to up the performance if you don't need it. Watch your powder choices and DON'T load below recommended levels.

I agree, I think the 270wsm would be a good choice also and I almost bought one back when I bought the Shorttrac.

Downloading could affect accuracy as those WSM perform at full trottle flawlesly, trial and error will make you find out... JP.

big boar,..

That is what I was thinking,....for the most part I wouldn't need the full power of the 300, but it would be nice to have that much power if I wanted it for larger game or long range shooting on power lines or clear cuts.

With quality of component a 308 will really equal a 30-06, i got a load with 170 gr HPS Lapua Lockbase that is on par with the most powerfull 30-06 load... JP.

That is one of the reasons I asked this question. I think what I will do is start off with min starting loads and see what happens. I see on the Hodgson Data site that the min start loads for the 300 are about the same as 30.06 max loads.

Huh?

With quality of component a 308 will really equal a 30-06,

The 30-06 has a case volume ~15% greater than the 308; Anything the 308 can do the 30-06 can do better.
The same holds true when comparing the 300 Winchester with the 30-06 or the 300 RUM with the 300 Winchester.

No matter how much pixie dust is used you can't fool physics and as they say in the hot-rod circles: "You can't beat cubic inches."

The 308 is just a more efficient case design, a 308 will be hitting as far with greater accuracy, there is a reason all the modern rifle designs are offer always in 308 and rarely in 30-06, i will turn your thing around, everything a 30-06 will do a 308 will do better... Only at looking you will see, not to say it's an obsolete round but it's versatility is way behind the 308... A 308 is a F-1 rifle, a 30-06 is a Nascar... JP.

Ahh....... Huh??

I have a .300WM Rem700 that I load directly with .308 load data all the time. I need to use 180gr+ bullets to keep accuracy decent due to the twist rate but other than that I don't have any issues. Up to 100yds the PoI is identical and whether loaded to .308 levels or .300WM levels it shoots about 1 MoA. When I tried 150gr bullets it opened up to 2-3 MoA. I haven't tried it at 200 or 300yds yet because those ranges have been closed for most of the winter where I shoot.

Best to stick to the medium or faster powders for .308 data though since they are leaving a lot of empty space in the .300WM case (will be the same in a .300WSM). My favourite powder is the same for this as it is for regular .308 loads which is H4895.

Due to the extra case capacity the pressure will be lower than a .308 and the velocity is also probably lower. I haven't chronied any of them to really check but I can't tell a difference between these reduced loads and my .308 Rem700 in terms of recoil.

I have a Browning A-Bolt in 300 WSM that shoots very small groups with 165 gr Acubonds and 61 gr of H4350 AOL 2.860 and 2890 fps. (Top end 30.06 velosity) great for deer and probably for every thing else.
