I just picked up one of these and am wondering what you 300WSM guys find work for your set up. I'll be hunting deer, bear (black) and moose with it. I am a nosler partition fan on my current set-up but may want to try something new just to keep it exciting (TSX?). I most likely will be using 165 for deer and 180's for moose and bear. What velocities are you able to get out of your reloads?

I've been having awesome success with IMR 4831 behind 168 gr match bullets out of my savage. ( Not for hunting ). You might try a few loads using that powder. Just go to the IMR website as there is piles of info.

You might want to work up to rem338win 's load. No way my hunting wsm could reach 71gr of H4831sc. IIRC, 69gr was getting hot.

You were likely not using TSX's then. They often need 1-2grs more powder to reach simular velocities compared to conventional bullets. The chamber in that Winchester wasn't too tight either. Anyway if I remember correctly, that was a book load from the Barnes Manual. They are listing 69.5 grains of RL19 on the Barnes site with that bullet, and H4831sc is slower, so I don't see the problem here. Anyway it is always good pratice to drop a few grains and work up. If you have a chrony, stop at around 2950-3000fps, as I will guarantee the pressures are in the 62000psi range and right where they should be.

No, I was using Partitions, original X bullets and MK's. Win brass and WLRM primers. Still have some a bunch of those rounds I'll never use, probably should pull them.

Cheers

Pet recipes:

165 grn TSX, 69.5 grns RL 19, WLRM primer in a Win case. Shoots MOA and MV is about 3030 fps (in my rifle anyway). All round cartridge for all but the biggest brown bears in NA.

Another is 180 grn Grand Slam, 64.5 grns IMR 4350, WLRM primer.

I've been using Speer Grand Slam 180 grain bullets with 66 grains of RL 19 which is near book maximum but safe in my gun a ruger frontier with 16.5 inch barrel - the velocities I get are about the same as an .06 with a conventional long barrel. 3 shot group sizes hover around 1/2 inch at 100 yards :D

LTbull01,
That is about exactly what i was looking for. I am an RL fan and am looking to get into the TSX's so I'll give that a go. Do you know what the min/max loads are for RL-19 with this bullet?

How's the muzzle balst on that beast.....

Scobo, Barnes lists the max with RL19 and tgher 180gr TSX as 69.5. I would probably start at 65 and work up with any bullet, including the Barnes to see what your rifle wants. If you have a chrony, work up until you get to the 2950fps range and stop, as you are likely reaching maximum. Pressure and velocity (all things being equal) walk hand in hand with ballistics.
