Gday!!
Just bought myself a 300short in A BOLT, new to the faster flying 30s an longer ranging hunting, normally walkin around the bush with a thumper 35whelen, but during the summer i plan on doing alot more glassing of gulleys/valleys an shooting them from alot further out than i would whilst stalking.

im not talkin 500-600 meters here either.. (for now)

Generally most shots will fall between 200 and 400ms at a guess, of course the closer the better :D

My question is where do you guys have your 300WSMs hitting at 100 Ms?
im using Winchester Super X 180gr factory loads for starters..

Ive read ballistic info an all that jazz but personally, what do you do..

Cheers for the replies.

I'm using a ballistic reticle with hash marks for 100-500 yards. So I zero at 100. Otherwise I'd sight it in high at 100. In any case, you need to verify the actual point of impact at the distances you intend to shoot at.

Mount a scope with finger adjustable turrets. Zero the scope to hit point of aim at 100m. Buy a range finder. Shoot at different distances and record how much adjustment your rifle/ammo combination needs to hit point of aim at each distance. Print a basic drop chart and tape it to your stock, or inside the cover of your scope cover. Works like a charm. Rifle pictured is a .223 AI, w/ vari-x III 3.5-10. It shoots 75 Amax really well. There's a 7rsaum big brother arriving in the next couple of days. It'll be set up the same way.

I sight all my big game rifles in identically - +3" @ 100.
If your WSM is making 2950 [A realistic figure] and the BC of that bullet is around .450, here is approximately what the trajectory will look like:
200: +3 to +3.2"
300: 0 to -2"
400: -11 to -13"
500: -29 to -31"
As Grizzlypeg stated, you need to actually shoot your rifle at the distances to get actual figures.

Nikon with bullet drop compensation..."0" at 200 yds. This too is on my 300wsm with 165 grain bullets. I've checked it with the 300 and 400 yard marks and it's easily good for 1 shot kills.

Cheers!!
And yes you guys are right about ACTUALLY shooting the gun at the ranges required.... was more of just a question as to what everyone sights in the laser pointer (300wsm) in at.
