I took my 300WSM and my 375 Ruger to the range the other day to do a final sight in check, and do a bit of off hand shooting.

I was walking out to check a 300 yard target (as I had forgotten my spotting scope) and took along my 375 Ruger, loaded wiht 270gr Factory loads, and 260gr Accubonds at 2750fps. I often take a rifle to practice quick offhand shots, shooting at various targets (often clay pidgeons) along the way.

Our gong is at 350 yards, and as I approached the 200 yard marker, I took an offhand shot at it, resulting in a very satisfying KERWHACK.

On the way back, I stopped again, and did the same. I stopped at 150 yards (200 yard shot) rested my hand angainst an uprigth, and whacked the gong a few more times. At the 100 yard targets I agian took a standing rested position on a post and whacked the gong a few more times, missing once. At 250 yards, there isn't much room for error!:)

Anyways, all along I noticed the gong didn't move too much with the impacts. (Sure it moved, but the thing is about 8" square, and 2" thick steel on very heavy chain)

Getting back to the firing line, I shot it with the 300WSM, 180gr TSX at 2950fps. THe gong REALLY moved. Like it bounced all over the place. Hititngit wiht the 375 produced the same results as before. Movement, but not nearly as much.

This probably doens't have much practical application relating to killing animals, but it was interesting to see the difference in 200fps and a different bullet construction on steel.

Anyone else find similar (or more interestingly- opposite- results)

Really? My observations have been the exact opposite. Nailing the gong with a lighter faster cal (like a 7mm RM) vs a 45-70 flinging 350 grain lumps of lead - the 45-70 is MUCH more impressive, despite the fact that 200 yards the 7mm has a much bigger impact energy.

I was out at the range yesterday and did something similar using a .338 WM with 225 gr. Accubonds and a 7mm RM with 160 gr. TSX. The .338 made a huge reverbarating whack on the gong but the 7mm just made a small impact noise. I did a visual inspection as I thought maybe the TSX tumbled on me. The .338 had very similar large craters (maybe 4 or 5X bullet size) but the TSX's cratered almost twice as deep but were only maybe 3X bullet diameter.
In retrospect probably what you would expect from these bullets and both sure to do the job when asked:D

I would have expected the opposite, as well, despite the 300 probably having more energy on paper than the 375.

At 350 yards, the 375 shouldn't be "running out of steam"... but maybe the 300 had just enough mor evelocity to make a good impact..Or maybe the TSX bullets make the gong react differently, as they penetrate the steel a bit deeper (judging from observing gongs)

Or mayeb it was just one of those weird things, like the 375 hit it dead center and pushed it back, without as much appaerent movement, and the 300 was closer to the edge, giving it some leverage to swing...:)

The first time I hit my 450yd gong with a 140gr TSX from my 280AI I thought I was going deaf...since then I've shot a heap of TSX's from various calibers at steel, and they definately make less of a "thump" than lead core bullets.

Unfortunately for critters, that is not the case when the TSX hits flesh:D

When my son and I were practising for our Africa trip we shot our 200 metre chicken and our 300 metre pig fmorthe shooting sticks. We were both shooting 168 gr TSX's his at 2800 and mine at 3200, the 2800 made a much more resonent whack and sometimes the 3200 would just blow clean through.

That is unusual.
