.303 Brit lead load?

Does anyone have a pet load for a 174 grain gas checked lead bullet
using H4895 powder for .303 brit?
My older Hornady manuel says 34grains as a max.
To me this sounds and looks way too low of a charge when i weighed it out.
If its correct what would a starting load be, less 5% or 10%?

The question seems to me to be - how fast do you want to push the bullet? Probably less than 2000fps to avoid leading your barrel. Charge seems about right to me because my lyman says a jacketed 180 goes about 2032 with 37 grains and 2350 with 41 grains (max) of IMR4895.

I did a quick check,
2 books I looked at did not list 172g lead bullet,&
did not list H4895

Not positive but if you load the load you were thinking --- you might be scrubbing lead out of your barrel for the next month

have you slugged your barrel ? shooting a undersized bullet will almost always lead the barrel

and if by chance you have a 2 groove barrel a high percentage will not shoot lead ( some will keyhole at 25-50 yds)

19grs. of 4759 is kinda the std. for .30 cal. cast w/gc......1600fps. save the 4895 for higher velocity.

You can load H4895 down to 60% of its listed max load, and I've done so, but it never resulted in the most accurate load.

I'd try it in the 24.0-30.0 gr range. That should result in MV's in the 1700-1900 fps range.

Leading occurs when the bullet-bore fit is poor (make sure you're at least 0.001" over groove diameter), lube quality and/or quantity is poor, or pressure is too high.

I use Red Dot, SR4759 and H4198 in the 303 Brit with cast bullets - I'd try them too.
