Hey guys I got a nice shooting no.5 but I need ammo! I know this question has been asked before but most places I check don't have any FMJ cheap surplus. Am I stuck paying 25$+ a box at Walmart here guys?

I got a couple boxes from Sail @ 19.49 a box... LeBarons was sold out & I think they might have been a buck cheaper...

Cheers
Jay

I would personally reccomend Prvi Partizan 174gr FMJBT; it's reasonably priced, and hot damn do they use some good brass. Talk to Henry at Budget Shooter's Supply, and he can get you hooked up with some good, cheap Prvi bullets for loading, too. Also, if you choose to handload, do yourself a favour and get a neck sizer die. Enfields are notoriously hard on brass, and the neck sizer will dramatically increase both longevity and ammo accuracy.

+2 Partizan is the way to go for the Lee Enfields. It also helps they load it with FMJ. I find soft points don't feed so well up the Enfield feed ramp also the Partizan stuff shoots the way the irons were calculated for or pretty close.

Alright thanks guys! I do reload (just started) but I guess I'll have to get some .303 dies and I'll keep my eye out for that Partizan stuff. Now off too the reloading forum haha

neck sizing is the way to go so get a neck sizing die along with a F/L die set also the oring trick has saved many cases its a oring placed infront of the rim also annealing every few firings helps

However, they load it with boat tail bullets. While they work in most rifles, some it does not. Enfield rifling was designed for use with flat based bullets. As such all rifle ammo was designed to have flat based bullets (all mk's up to 7. MK8 was designed as MG ammo).

So you may get better groups if you use a flat based bullet.

It baffles me why all of these ammo manufacturers (prvi,S&B,remington to name a few) make their .303B FMJ ammo boat tailed. When they were gearing up for manufacture they must have had MKVIII ammo as their guide.

Try the LEE Collet Die for .303.

When firing ammo for the first time, use Ed's Famous O-Rings (or pony-tail ties, a buck a hundred at your local Dollar Store) on your cartridges: centralises things in the Chamber, assures proper radial case expansion and minimum stretch.

Keep your cases segregated by rifle if you have more than one rifle.

Load a bit on the mild side for best accuracy; MilSpec load was designed as a compromise between the known most-accurate loading and the hottest which could be run through a worn-out rifle with a minimum bore. I load mine about 200 ft/sec under MilSpec; accuracy is excellent.

For a nice, accurate load try 37 or 38 grains of 4895 with a Sierra 180 Pro-Hunter flatbase bullet seated to the OAL of a Ball round.

Zippy and not-too-hot hunting load is 40 grains of 4064 with a Hornady 150 Spire Point, again seated to the OAL of a Ball round. This exposes the entire canelure and looks funny, but it sure shoots nice. My P-14 loves this one.

Keep your brass TRIMMED to correct length: 2.222" case length is MAX. Ideal is about 2.212": 10 thou under.

If using a regular die set, LUBE the INSIDE of the NECK when sizing: reduces case stretch wonderfully.

Most important of all: have fun!

Hope this helps.

I really enjoy using the Lee Loader with mine. It seems to be easy on the brass but I have only about 4 firings so far. What is the OAL of a ball round Smellie?
