I am looking for information on a side mount scope mount for a Lee Enfeild #4 Mk1. I saw a post on CGN that had a pic in the post of one but cannot track it down. The previous owner of my Brit thought it best to grind off the back 1/3 of the receiver, and taking the scope mounting platform with it. I have also heard of people and/or gunsmiths taking angle iron and mounting/welding it to the reciever and then drilling/tapping in the scope mounts.....is the welding option viable?? Thanks for the replies. Brad

I saw the gunsmith at The Shooting Edge mount a scope on a new Australian LE not too long ago, and it was a nice bit of work. No welding or ugliness was involved, just some drilling and tapping on the receiver.
Not sure how much he charged to do it though, but you could call them tomorrow and find out.

"...grind off the back 1/3 of the receiver, and taking the scope mounting platform with it. ..."

There isn't really a scope mounting platform, sounds like they ground off the charger bridge at least, and maybe the rear sight, replacing the latter with a rear sight on the barrel?

That's a shame, because one of the easy options, though it is not the best, is the Weaver TO1 mount which needs that charger bridge, and most of the designs that avoid drilling and tapping rely on the rear sight mount. If your receiver still has that, it is a simple option. The drawback is that you lose the rear sight (can be put back, though.)

You might find a Parker Hale side mount, which will require drilling and tapping on the side of the receiver. They have been out of production for years so you need to get lucky on the secondhand market for that.

There is the Cad-Technick mount, which screws on at the safety and the ejector screw hole, no gunsmithing, and it comes apart to allow removal of the bolt and use of the iron sights, which remain in place, and retains zero when you put it back together. The downside is that the scope is mounted rather high, so you need some kind of cheekpiece on the stock, it is one of the more expensive ones, and as far as I know is only available from U.S. sources (e.g. Brownells). (This is what I use.)

Have you tried the search function for this website? We have covered the topic of Enfield scope mounts a few times.

303 Scope Mounts

There are plans for a home made scope mount on 303british.com (an excellent site for all things 303) The plans appear easy enough for anyone to make. I hope this helps.

Yes, a mount like that can be easily made. I used a piece of fairly thick aluminum angle, with a flat bottomed Weaver base (maybe one for a M336 Marlin) screwed to it.
You might find one of the PH base and ring sets, but that will be catch as catch can. These have been out of production for years.
Williams makes a base and ring set to be mounted on the left sidewall (d&t), perhaps these are exportable. You could email Brownells and ask.

I have seen these sets go for $30 at local gun shows, so keep your eyes and ears open. (and no I don't have any of these sets on hand). :D
