not sure yet of year or model... which i know makes it hard to price, but I know an old guy who doesnt want it and will sell it to me very cheap. what should I look for and what kinda price range would be fair for a decent condition gun of unknown age and model

thanks in advance sorry I dont have more details

This is better placed in the Milsurp forum (below this forum).

But to answer your question, its really hard to tell. The prices of these things really varies, they can go for $50 for common sporterized (modified for sporting/Hunting) to over $1000 for particularly rare versions like a 1941 Long Branch Made No.4 Mk1, to over $3000 for an all original sniper.

So, until you get some more details, we can't really give you fare quote.

basic Things to look for are:
Model, it will most likely me a No.1 Mk3, or a No.4 Mk1.
Full wood, Does it have a full military dress with the entire barrel covered in wood?
Matching Numbers, Depending on model, their will be serial #'s on different parts, these should all be the same.

Maker and model information will likely be either on the left sidewall or the receiver or on the buttsocket.
An amateur bubba grade sporter is likely worth $50-$100, assuming it is functional.
A factory sporting conversion could bring to $250.
An unmolested original in fine condition would likely bring $300 to $5000, depending on what it is.
Sorry, but your question is akin to asking, "I can buy a Ford car. Don't know the year, model or condition. What would be a fair offer?"

Best thing is to get some pictures. A good picture of the entire rifle, as well as clear pictures of the left and right side of the action/receiver will tell us pretty much everything we need to know to give you a ballpark value.

:D
Someone unfortunate enough to own a Chrylser product would likely say that the Ford was worth about the same as a bubba'd Lee Enfield missing its bolt and magazine.;)

well price range doesnt matter now he is giving it to me for free... no pics yet should get it tomorrow

"...he is giving it to me..." You'll still need to know what model it is. Where is the rear sight? A No. 4's is on the receiver. A No.1's is on the barrel.
Check the headspace before you shoot it.
