303 or 7,62X 54R?

7.62x54R because it generates more energy. That being said it would be hard not to take my SMLE Lithgow in to the bush should I get my Bison draw.
Pith helmet and all I say, what what old boy. :D

I use a Finn mosin. 4 rds down with the bolt closed on an empty chamber. Keep some 5 rd stripper clips in my pocket. Those old Finns are pretty accurate.

I prefer the shorter M44, and have set mine up as a short range bush gun. I chopped the bayonet off, blued where I chopped, and refinished the stock.

It is perfect for the bush, and the sights are quick and easy to get on target.

The sights on the Enfield are likely better for longer range shooting, but harder to pick up quickly IMHO.

The Enfield is also longer, and I have had iffy performance with feeding from mags, despite trying different mags.

Scoping both is not ideal, but the Enfield would be the better option there for sure.

Ammo availability goes to the Enfield but you can get the x54 easy enough, that I wouldn't really worry about it.

The benefit with the Mosin is the cheap surplus for practice, which I appreciate!

In the end if you are looking for a hunting rifle that is easy to scope, why not look at some of the mausers on the EE or Tradex? Some there for pretty good prices, and ready for a scope.

I just recently picked up a 6.5x55 sporter with a VXII for $500 on the EE!

I love the Mosin, but for hunting i prefer the .303. The safety on a LE is wayyy easier to work with than that of a Moisin, especially with gloves. And if you want to mount a scope on your Moisin, then that safety is nearly unworkable.

Because I simply could care less about you fudds, and purists with your old relics!

I have no use for a bayonet, and the weight, and length that come with it!

WTF difference does it make? This is a post war Polish M44. What historical value doe it hold?

For me it was a cheap beater with cheap surplus ammo, and a good little project.

Hell, just for that comment, I think I am gonna get rid of the upper handguad, and chop the stock as well! :p

Was this before or after you went Vegan, started sending love letters to Wendy, donated money to Justin Trudeau, began committing unspeakable perversions on puppies, and joined the NDP?

Some things you just don't boast about doing on certain forums, you know...

Forget the Russki/Polski stuff. Man up and be a Canadian.;) The .303 British has been part of our hunting heritage for the past 100 yrs or so. I wonder how many trainloads of deer, elk, moose, caribou and bear have been shot with them.

Hands down choice is the No 4/5 LE, sportered or not. Big pluses are the slick action, safety, adaptability for a scope, and universal availability of ammo.

Here's a pic of my No4 sporter with the no drill mount on it.

There are a few out there with a drill and tap style mount on them that are really nice. I know where there is one that if I wanted another sporter I'd be on it, nice rifle and scope combo. Let me know and I can point you towards it!

Whoah! Nice rifle, and nice scope. :)

This just made me sad.

I have both and have hunted successfully with both. At one time commercial hunting ammunition was less available for the x54r, but much of that has changed in recent few years, as well as surplus is plentiful on todays market. The majority of serious shooters self-load anyways, but it is a consideration when jumping into either caliber.

The safety on the LE is easier to operate but if I'm walking with my Mosin, I don't keep one in the pipe until I sit down and stop.

I like them both and they can be had for cheap. Flip a coin or get both is a better idea.
