ok i have a line on a 1917 smle no 3 matching numbers uncut sportorized stock the bore is dark but unpitted (looks grungy but cleanable)
it needs a new stock and a few more other parts but stocks seem hard to find...are they? would love to rescue this old vet

Stock sets pop up from time to time on E-Bay. Keep looking and be prepared to pay. Gunshows can be a good source too.

Hold out for what you want, don't settle for less because the second you do, something better will come along. Just don't rush it.

Get written proof of good headspace before you buy. Fixing bad headspace on a No. 1 is expensive. The bolt heads are not numbered like those of a No. 4. You need a handful of bolt heads and headspace guages.

You're doing the right thing, especially with the matching serial's. I would suggest putting a post in the EE parts section. If you make the title and requirements very clear, you will get a lot of response. Sometimes people will even give you stuff for the price of shipping! (you know who you are, thank you!!!):)

good point sunray it was done(a local purchase) the rifle was a dust bunny haven but overall it looks ok

thanks so far for the advice guys, any thing else from anybody is greatly appreiciated
 
Take the rifle to Jason's for the headspace test. If it fails, he'll have two or three spare bolt heads in the bin to try out.

If that fails, the Perth Gun Show is next month. I've got 4 riders up front, and an empty seat in the back of the van for a guy with short legs ....

If the bore is dark it isn't worth fixing up...it'll cost more than it's worth for sure...lots of No 1's around with nice shiny bores, much more worthwhile.

I just gave it a good cleaning. the bore is not as promising as i thought but you get what you pay for. and i didn't pay alot. I am going to try to see if it holds a group, this weekend (providing i am not sick in bed as the missus is recovering from Scarlett fever:eek: )

what was the origional finish on these things ?
