In measuring the bullet diameter I find it is .3224". Obviously not .303, but it sure looks similar when compared to .303 Ctg. beside it. I'm guessing 8mm Mauser.
I shouldn't have taken someone's word for it.

All British service .303" arms, Bren ,Browning, Vickers, Lewis, Hotchkiss, Maxim etc, used the regular .303" British rimmed ctg. There were a few experimental rimless .303" rounds made in the 1920s and the .303" Magnum target ctg.
Bushwacker could you post a pic of your rimless ctg and its measurement and headstamp?

might be this....
RIMLESS .303?

(from AR, Q&A, Dec93, p51)

Q: I have a rimless cartridge in my collection with a British military headstamp, "R^L 18". The case body is wider and the neck longer than the rimmed .303 British, but overall length and rim diameter are the same. Did the British make a rimless .303?

A: The cartridge you describe is known as a .303 Lewis or .303 Lewis Rimless. According to Fred A. Datig's CARTRIDGES FOR COLLECTORS, VOLUME I, it was developed experimentally by the British around the end of World War I to help improve the performance of the American-designed Lewis machine gun.

The Berdan-primed case body was enlarged to .503" and the neck lengthened. To make chamber conversions easier, the rim diameter and overall length were kept the same, but varied considerably in the other dimensions (see accompanying table). The propellant was Cordite and the bullet cupro-nickel covered. The Royal Laboratory, Woolwich, indicated by the "R^L", was the center of British cartridge development during this period. -- M.A.K.

.323 is 8mm
It certainly looks to be an 8mm Mauser. Does it measure 57mm long on the case?

Yeppers, 8mm Mauser, 8X57mm.
1) is Polte made, 1940
2) is Draht -und Metallwarenfabrik, 1941.
If you want the speciffics of the codes, I posted links to 8mm Mauser pages somewhere a page or two back in this forum.

As for various 303 named rounds
303 Adder
303 Fraser (also has a rimless version)
The 303 Rimless Experimental
303 Magnum Rimless
303 Axite
etc, etc, etc.
There are several more on top of that based on necking up/down other rounds as well.
