Hey Gang,

I have an ad posted on the EE looking for a stock for my sporterized No 4, Mk I. I had since started looking around on this inter-web thingy, and I found that ATI, (and I am sure other companys) makes a stock for the Lee Enfields. Does anyone have any experience with these types of stocks? Any things to look for?

Any advice? Any site sponsors sell these?

Thanks.

ATI and the like are a low budget plastic stock.....not my first choice as they don't fit right;require bedding and don't stand up in cold weather. Boyds make a wood set that requires fitting and finishing so it's limited to guys that can do the work. The choice I prefer is to get a good Parker Hale, Fajen, Bishop or Judd set that has been fitted and finished. It's a matter of preference and budget. ATI for a $100 or PH for $300. You have to be patience as they come up form time to time on EE, eBay, GunBrokers and other sites. Just my opinion and experience with these products. Ron

i'm currently using moulded aftermarket stocks on two of my enfields and haven't had any issues with them. neither bedding nor fitting was required and no issues were noted in cold november hunting when knocked around on a quad. i believe they are ati. i like them because they have the higher cheek piece so you get a better sight picture when using a scope. the ramline aftermarket enfield stocks do not have the higher cheek comb

alternatively, i have purchased boyds stocks for my rugers and see they also have aftermarket stocks for the enfields. the quality of the boyds stocks was great on the two i ordered and i assume the quality would be just as good on the enfields. trust this helps. regards

I bet someone who is doing a military restoration on one would love to see their sporter stock go to a good home. I'll b doing one in a few months but its a Mk1/3 so the wood is a bit different than a MkI.

If you look at enough of these threads you'll see there are some people who got RamLine and ATI plastic stocks that installed easily with no fitting required, some needed a bit of work, and a few are too bad to be worth the trouble. I have an ATI that isn't straight (the forestock, bent in the vertical plane so it won't come up to the barrel forward of the action). Unfortunately I didn't buy it new so I have no recourse to warranty. Fortunately, the gun came with it's wooden stock which is fine with me. If I wanted another I'd buy a new ATI because I could take it back if it didn't fit. You should be able to find them around $80 plus tax new retail (more if you want camouflage,). I think they aren't bad at that but it's a subjective judgement.

I bought an ATI stock for my No 1 MkIII at Cabelas. It fit perfectly, and it made my rifle more accurate to boot. I have used it for two years now, and not had any issues. Quality is the same with everything; two people might buy the same car. One car is fine, the other is a lemon.

Does anyone know where to get the Parker hale stocks for the sporter enfields?

Off a Parker Hale conversion of a milsurp. Parker Hale doesn't make them anymore, in fact PH went out of business some years ago and the name and rights were sold so you may find some new stuff on the market under the PH brand but it won't be accessories for milsurp Enfields. Independent gunshops, especially if they have been in business for decades, and gunshow dealers might have some used stuff, and watch the EE.

Are you sure you don't mean sport socks?I'm sure Smellie will be coming out of his sock closet shortly to educate you on proper terminology and how all ATI crap does not belong in Milsurps.Perhaps refer to the gunsmithing section or better yet let's start a Bubba FAQ Sticky.

The Monte Carlo, semi-pistol grip stock sets were not made by Parker Hale, they were made elsewhere. I've tried to get the makers to do some more, but so far no success.

The cheapest option is just to buy a rifle with the stock set you want on it and either use it or remove the stock and fit to your preferred rifle.

I just sold a SMLE with such a set on it in nice shape for about $200.

LouThePou has taken possession of a Boyd's laminate set for my now-stubby 45 ACP enfield build. Early indications are that it's a nice couple pieces of wood. The buttstock is apparently a bit wiggly (easily remedied) but it's generally well done, and sports an aesthetically acceptable Monte Carlo.

BTW, if I'm ever on the run from the mob, I'm going to take the alias of Monte Carlo. Or Carlo Monte. Haven't decided yet.

I love my ATI on my number1. My brother gave me an old number 1 that most would have scrapped. Mt son did up a sporter he had found number 4 with an ATI. So I thought why not. Well I am certainly glad I did. It made an light awesome looking sporter. I scoped it shot 303 Federal 180's out of it. The groups were 1" at a hundred... go for it I say...
