.303 Sport Stocks?

So...

I headed down to Al Simmons on the weekend to get some loctite and a ATI stock for the .303. I brought the rifle with me, so they could have a look, and low and behold I have more problems that I totally should of caught, but totally missed.

So excuse not knowing the proper terms but: the rounded band at the trigger guard, not the guard itself, but the band that would go around the stock, has been "beaten in" so that a PO could fit his stock on. He had made a one piece bottom (butt, and lower fore) with the top of the fore screwed on to the wood. So, I guess these bands were in the way, so he just hammered them in, so he could get his wood on. Sorry, no pics to share yet...

So...is there any point in saving this? I am going back to Al Simmons for more loctite and have a talk with their gunsmith to see what he says. If it's going to cost more to fix it, I would rather just buy a "new" one.

Ideas / advice?

Mark..you're going to have to post a picture or two of the butt socket. Sounds like it's a mess. might be able to salvage however would need some detailed pictures. Ron

Ok....I have tried to post pics, and I am about to throw my phone down the street. If someone wants to pm me with a phone #, I can text the pics and hopefully someone else can post them for all to see.

Well I am posting some photos for Mark, this looks quite bad.
Looks like it has been cut, welded (bronzed) and generally beat to poo.

I would try to find another receiver, you will never fit a butt stock in that again. Personally it would be a parts rifle for me.

So, talking to the 'smith at Al Simmons...he said it COULD be done, but it wouldn't be worth the time, effort and price, and generally advised against fixing it. But I did get some loctite which was cool of him...

I think it's safe to say that whoever did that piece of butchery didn't know what they were doing. To braze like that they would have had to heat the action up so hot that any heat treatment such as in the recoil lugs is ruined, and IMO the action as a whole is no longer safe to use. Salvage the removable parts and make it into a paper weight. The grinding is so sloppy that the action is beyond redemption cosmetically anyway, even with the butt socket cut off for a one piece stock. FUBAR!
