Can a 303 brit. be rechambered to 7.62x54R? The projectile is the same dia. but the shoulders are different. Has anyone ever done it?
Thanks.

The projectile is NOT the same diameter, it is .308 as opposed to .311. The cartridge is shorter. The only practical soulution is to re-barrel the rifle and then you still have bolt and extractor issues to deal with. Cheaper to pick up a good used .308. If you just want to cut the cost of shooting your rifle, start reloading.

all 7.62 is not .308- the russian runs .310 and the british is .311- navy arms down in the states used to offer this conversion- something wierd- russian 7.62x39 runs .310-311 as well but the ruger 7.62 x39 is a 308 bore

The bullet diameters of 7.62x54R and .303 are similar, as are the bore diameters. .303 tends to be a bit larger. The .303 case is longer that the Russian. The barrel can be rechambered, although fired cases will look rather odd. If the barrel were set back, fired cases would be normal. I have no idea if the 7.62 will work through the magazine. Bolt would be fine, extractor might need adjustment.
The conversions have been done to take advantage of really cheap 7.62 ammunition. Whether it makes sense, or is cost effective is an open question. It will certainly lower the value of any decent Lee Enfield.
