3030 Load Data

I am looking at data for reloading 3030 and am finding I don't have quite the right components. I have Benchmark and IMR4198 powders and WLR primers. I want to use Hornady 170gr FP (available at the local shop).


  • My load data for this bullet and IMR4198 calls for Rem9 1/2 primer. What should I do with my load if I use a WLR primer?


  • I have load data for Benchmark and Sierra 170gr FN and Nosler 170gr RN. The data is essentially the same. That is to say the starting load for Sierra is 25.3gr and 78% of maximum load for Nosler is 25gr. Both loads use WLR primer and the same COL (2.550). Can I use Hornady 170gr FP with this starting load and Hornady's COL of 2.530?

If you start at the 'starting load' you won't have a problem using a different primer.
Start at the 25.0gr load and work up slowly. Generally, loads for the same type (jacketed) and weight of bullet are interchangeable. You'll usually only see a difference in loads if you go to cast or homogeneous bullets. Even then, the starting loads are usually OK. Just remember to work up slowly.
 
"...don't have quite the right components..." Yes you do. Load for the bullet weight. Who made it or its shape doesn't matter. The primer doesn't matter much for hunting loads. The BC doesn't either.
IMR4198 uses a bit less powder with slightly lower velocities and pressures than Benchmark for a 170, but that isn't a big deal.
You'll see slightly different data in different manuals because of the varying conditions on the day of the tests. It doesn't make one manual better than another. Having lots of loads using different powders and bullet weights, like the Lyman manual, is what make one better. And that's just versatility.
 
30/30 is such a versatile cartridge.. I've burned a lot of H4198 under a cast 150gr as a metallic silhouette load.

The real question, is what do you want to do: Full power hunting load, or something easy and accurate to play with at the range?

Yes....what 1shot said. I can .pdf off to you load data for this cartridge from several different manuals if you want it....just send me a PM...
 
Well, thank you all for your suggestions, thoughts, and sharing. Being new to all this I'm reluctant to stray to far from published data. I don't want any mistakes and without personal experience....you get my drift.

My objective is to economically reload for the range. Hence wanting to use the two powders that I currently have. I will transfer my knowledge and newly acquired shooting skills to a successful moose hunt this fall.

I'm not opposed to buying a new powder, but what I have is paid for. I only shoot 20 - 30 rounds per week so a pound of powder goes along ways.

Not that it matters to my original question, but I'm shooting a Savage 24V with open sights on the 100yd range - exactly the way I intend to hunt with it.
 
From IMR manual dated 06/2000.

30/30 Win: Rem case, Rem 9.5 primer, Rem 170gr SPCL, IMR4198 24.5gr MAX for 1915fps. (Which likely will not bounce off of a Deer, if thats your intended goal)

But for full power loads there are better/slower powders available..
