3031 for .223?

Works fine with 55 grain bullets, but the powder charge tends to fill right up to the top of the neck to the case mouth. OK if you are using a single stage press. Worked well in a bolt action rifle, but I have no experience with an AR platform.

I tried it in my 1:10 twist target AR. Functioned fine but with 52 gr. SMKs and Hornady AMAXs it wasn't as accurate as some of the other powders I tried. Best groups were with Hodgdon Benchmark. Plus I hate metering stick powders.

In my T/C Encore I found 25.1 grs of IMR 3031 with a 45 gr Sierra and CCI 400 primers to be a very accurate load.

Also - 23 grs of IMR 3031 with a Winchester 55 gr PSP was good. 23.5 grs gave cratered primers and poor accuracy.

I use 3031 behind hornady 55gr fmj. 22gr shoots ragged holes at 100 yards if I do my part with the xs7. That load though is too soft to cycle reliably my mini14. For that I'll be stepping up to 24gr

I've found 3031 excellent in 223,
I had a very accurate load in my Tikka T3 using the 69g Sierra.

Also worked Very well for me in AR carbines.
It's a bit too fast to cycle a 20" rifle, so it was tricky.
Shot a lot of 55g FMJ using 24g.

It actually an ideal powder for 223, burns very efficient according to quick load.

Late to the party since I don't check this forum too frequently. Works fine with the tavor. I'm using lower loads than everyone else here with 55 gr hornady fmjs with good results (my skill is the limit so far ;) ).

I just couldn't be bothered loading .223 with extruded powder as it seems to not measure well for doing bulk loading. I have tried 3031 in the past though and had respectable results, but now use WC735 almost exclusively.
