I just got her back with the shorty barrel and flash hider installed. She is pretty much finished now, and weighs in at a stoutly 14lbs 5oz without ammo or magazine!!!

It will be worth packing the weight just to see the Fish Cops face when out deer hunting this year. Does anyone have ideas on sling configurations? I'm not a fan of the type that strap around the rear stock, but I would like to eliminate the stock rear sling point.

I tried hunting with my M14 two years ago. THe other inconvient part besides the weight was the overall length of the rifle while walking through the sticks. At least the rifle Hunter1970 has a shortened barrel and muzzle break. With the right sling set-up he'll be better off (don't ask me what that is).

It definately has the "look cool factor" that many are going for with the M14. How does it shoot?

My M14 wasn't ideal for my hunting, so I am building a M40 instead :)))

The stock and rail are take offs from a SOCOM II extended rail rifle. DWP cheek riser, 4X14 Falcon Menace glass (thanks Frontier Taxidermy) temporarily mounted in two Aimpoint twist mounts, Tango Down ACB bipod (thanks Socom Suply), Vortex style FH (thanks M14 Doctor), tuned trigger and shimmed gas port (thanks Hungry and Savage) , Rooster33 OP rod guide.

It's a brute next to the usual deer rifle - a Win model 70 in 243 - but you have to try something different once in a while ;). It should be a hoot on a hill over looking a good gopher patch.

Here is how we slung our rifles.
We attached a double layer of very strong pollycord.

Its kind of hard to see but the string wraps around the but of the stock and meeting on the hind part of the cheekrest(on top), going around the cheeckrest(forward horizontal) and tied off with the edges burnt off with a lighter.
Repeat twice.
Second string is for a back up always, just in case the first one tares, whish it never has.
Than simply make 2 loops of string (again one for backup) that will attach from the sling to the crossing of the vertical and horizontal crossing (the back end of the cheekpiece). Make the loops as long as you feel comfortable with, we usually make them about 2 to 3 inches long.

in this config' the rifle is never upside down when slung.
the front attach' is also by using two string loops that go around the front sight steel loop. no sling studs or steel sling loops used, they are removed. they make too much noise when trying to move around.

Here in this picture you can see how we attached out sling at the front.
Im sorry if it’s a bit blurry but you can see that the sling is attached with 2 loops of string onto the front sight.

Hope this info helps.
Good luck.
