305 Conversion to SOCOM

Lazerus- My remark was an expression of surprise at your level of.. excitement? re the SOCOM 16. You seem almost offended at its existence.

FWIW In a recent review in American Rifleman (Jan 06); "more than a few shooters have watched the SOCOM 16 in action and made the observation that the muzzel seems to dip when it is fired." pg 64

Apparently that comp works real well.

I agree that a full auto (what you mean by R&R?) .308 is a handfull but the SOCOM isn't full auto.

As I read thru this thread, one thought comes to mind... where have all the gunsmiths gone? Answer, they have died poor and lonely bacause shooters out there were not willing to pay the nickle required to get their favorite lounden boomer off the drawing board.
When we set up to do the P & D Match Socom Project, we decided we would do it only one way..we would strive to build as accurate a rifle as we could given what we had to work with.
We spend 13.5 hours (Thats $86.00/hr or $1061.00 in labour) on each rifle. That includes setting up a new bolt and headspacing it, glass bedding and far to many other little things to mention here. We MANUFACTURE precision op rod guides ($80.00), we MANUFACTURE cylinder lock assemblies and thread them ($170.00). We manufactured many special jigs and fixtures for this project ($525.00). We specially engraved each and every rifle's op rod with the inscription "P & D Enterprizes Match Socom 1 of 10" 2 of 10 and so on. This was done tastefully and accurately to reflect the quality of the product that we build! If you brought your rifle to us, you just spent about $1800.00 and that doesn't include the rifle!
It is only because of the fantastic business relationship that we at DYCOR Special Services have with P & D that these rifles turned out to be as inexpensive as they did! You can thread a barrel with a die from a tap and die set, but your threads will not be straight on the barrel and your flash hider will not be properly aligned!
For those who have purchased these rifles remember to use 125 to 130 grain bullets, the TAC loads work very well.

m39a2: Highly interesting....do you have a photograph of a finished product? (closeup of the gas cylinder end/muzzle would be very appreciated!). How long is the barrel on your conversion?

Thanks...

That being said, there WAS a weird and wunnerful M-14 SHORTY that used a tricky M-60 Gas assembly. Full R&R was an option. Supposedly reliable with as short a barrel as you could ever want. I think Ron Smith and Tim LaFrance did these.
LAZ

That rifle was called the M14K. It is mentioned on the Smith Enterprises Website.Rumour has it that it may once again appear................After U.S. military contacts are completed.

Sights are as issue, tightened and parts replaced as required. We've been too busy building the things to take photo's of them. # 1 is on the rack at P & D and other than the colour (green) and the vortex flash hider, it is the same as all the rest.

m39a2, i think this is the first that a lot of us have heard about your version of the rifle... it sounds very interesting.... but its not easy for us to wander over to P&D...

Wow.

A Rooster33 stainless one piece NM op rod guide is $65.00 shipped, and his Navy style metric threaded sight is $75.00 shipped.

A real Smith Navy gas lock sight ( SAE) runs around $130.00 Cdn.

I'll have to tell him to up his prices a bit.;)

We manufactured these pieces and hand fit them to each rifle that way we can maintain the accuracy that we want.

Why don't you guys quit hijacking the thread and attempt to answer C broad arrow's original question. Does anyone know of a source for 16" barrels and the special gas lock/muzzle compensator.

Yes You Have to buy the Rifle from Springfield Armouries as all the components are Propriatary. The other option is to locate a machinist that build the components:D

Sorry to hijack this thread one last time but I think we need to clear up a few points mentioned by Skooch who decided to discuss this matter in a public forum. When we decided to do the modified 305's we started with a more expensive base price ($499.00 vs $399.00) than Marstar. Even though we are $100 more we could sell everyone at this price in our area. We are not the importer and had to pay more to get these rifles than the distributor. We were unable to establish the final retail price so we said to EVERYONE that it would be between $1499 to $1599 depending on the machining costs. We did not ask for any down payments but Skooch wanted to reserve one for sure so we took a deposit. When we established the final price Skooch eventually backed out and we happily refunded his deposit. Nothing was said at this time about us charging an additional $200 more than we promised nor did he mentioned the first time we SCREWED him. This was a new project for us and we tried to recover our cost and make a reasonable profit. I'm sorry that Skooch feels that he was treated poorly and required him to discuss this matter here rather than speak to me personally. Also I have been off the forum for a couple of months due to the end of year business requirements and the Liberal Party scare tactics that drove up our sales and gave the gun business more attention in the media that we were more than happy to respond to.

To clarify the work that was done on our 305 Socom project:
1. supply mil spec fiberglass stock and glass bed to National Match spec.
2.supply new bolt, fit and headspace to 1.630"
3.complete diasembly of rifle (remove barrel from action) and cut down barrel to 18.5 ", crown and thread for flash hider(note this was indexed so that no washer was required.
4.supply AR15 (AR 10 not available) flash hider and ream for .30 cal
5.manufacture match grade op rod guide
6.polish trigger group and clean let off
7.fit gas cylinder and manufacture fibre washer
8.mil spec coating on entire rifle including refinishing stock
9.engraving of op rod
10.manufacture Socom cylinder gas lock (this required a CNC program and manufacture)
11.size front sight to national match spec
12.reassemble rifle
We feel that the $1599 price compares fairly against the Springfield Armory Socom that we sell for $2350. The SA Socom is restricted and our gun is mil spec while many of the SA parts are not. This project has been ongoing since the summer and frankly has consumed more energy and time than we considered. We still haven't received the complete shipment and all units are spoken for. Sorry I havent posted any pictures as I am not very computor savy. Thanx for the positive interest in this project.

P of PDent...Do you plan to continue with this project and offer others an opportunity to particiapte?

It sounds like you have a winner on your hands...just needing a little more time and luck to complete.

Can you let us know your plans for the project?
