Hi all. I see a few pple are changing there FS on the Norc. Is there a solid reason for this or is it a cosmetic thing. Iread somewhere that the early Norcs didnt have the slots cut, and I can see that would be a waste of steel, but my FS has all the slots cut so whats the difference??
Just for s--ts and giggles Im gonna be trying er out today with the FS off just to see the difference

I changed mine because it was spot welded on and in trying to get it off I split it really badly. I imagine that for those trying to shim the gas block and do other repairs/modifications to the firearm this is likely why they change it.

Unless you feel imminent #### loss, it's not a huge deal.
Even if you just break the welds, it allows you to remove the gas system parts and do things like shim properly or tweak the figure-8 gas lock nut for a very tight fit (flipping it over, swapping it out, sanding one side very finely).
HOWEVER, at the last calgary clinic one of the FS's sort of broke apart when we removed it - instead of the welds breaking, the rear of the FS broke and stayed on the barrel(there's a picture somewhere, don't know if it got posted) so I wouldn't bother unless you have a spare.
Personally, I have an old Polytech (no slits) that I want to replace so I can get dat ping.

I like bayonet lugs. The early 2003 to 2007 series did not come with them. I suspect that they were bound for the US or Kaliphornia market.

Their loss, our gain.

I still replace the kommunist zhinese unit for a Springfield unit and that really pings nicely.

cheers,
Barney

The stock chinese unit is two pieces welded together, and on mine the weld was the really poorly done. The flash hider quickly developed some extra holes when fired, as gas started leaking out through the areas of bad weld penetration.

Plus, I wanted a bayonet lug.

It may have a detrimental effect on achieving top accuracy that the rest of the rifle is capable of:

Being not vented, the moment the bullet leaves the barrel, the swirling gasses aren't free to just expand in every direction (like a typical hunting barrel), they aren't free to expand in certain directions (like a proper flash hider), they aren't shunted off axis and slowed cooled (like a sound suppressor)...no, they are contained and reflected off a tight cylindrical surface for another 3 inches. Any turbulence in this expanding gas could throw the bullet off slightly.

I'm not talking a big difference in accuracy here...it might not even be noticeable under 300m. But if you plan on competing at 500m, or just want the best the rifle has to offer, either remove it or replace it with a proper one.

Think about it this way: match grade or precision rifles have the muzzle crowned very precisely, so that the gases are released perfectly all around the edge of the bullet, not venting on one side before the bullet is gone from the gases. Well, these old Chinese non-vented fakes, is like putting the absolute WORST muzzle geometry you could possibly put on a rifle!

I replaced mine for that reason...and also because the proper one actually looks a lot better IMO. And got help putting it on, thanks Thomas! :D

I should add: I replaced mine with a Chinese proper vented flash hider, that way it didn't cost much for the part.

Thanks for the input, mines vented and if its not hurting I'll leave it alone.Never got the chance to shoot without the FS on today.. me scope self destructed and I got distracted...as you would. Then I had to kick start the oprod to clear a few jams, not sure if it was the ammo or my new mags yet....I strongly suspect the mag, cos me old mag worked flawlessly.
Will find out and rectify later on when I clean up.
Thanks again.

Forgot to say mines been on and off for ages I got lucky breaking mine free.

That would be my flash hider. It was welded on there VERY well.

I took it off in order to be able to get access to the gas lock in order to tighten things up...and I'm not exactly heatrbroken that there's now an SEI Good Iron brake living in the spot where the Norc flash hider used to be.

This is why I changed mine. You can see the ragged edge where the welds broke while being removed.

This is kinda fuzzy but you get the point.

So I had two of mine chopped to 18 1/2" and tried a navy sight:

And as soon as Dlask came out with his GLFS I got two of them, along with Dlask manufactured flash hiders:
