Well, this one is finally starting to take shape. SOCOM II extended rail cluster and fiberglass stock, Tango down bi pod, Rooster33 OP rod guide, and Falcon 4x14 glass. Just waiting for a Hungry/45ACPKING meet to hit Calgary for tuning, and barrel cut. I still need to mount the rings (Aimpoint twists just for mock up), add on the check piece, and after the barrel is threaded, put on the Vortex FH. I'm scared to put the thing on a scale and see the numbers. I can't wait to start ripping through the battle pack stock pile.:rockOn::rockOn:

Looks good!!! Will look even better with the shorter barrel. ;)

Are you going to paint it or keep it the way it is?

I have a Specter Gear 3 point sling on mine. I find it helps with the weight packing it in the bush for a couple day hunting trip.

I think I'll run it black for now. I have another build with the short cluster rail, and the Vltor collapsible stock that I am toying with painting. I am torn on the thought of cutting the barrel to the minimum non-restricted length, and falling into the "big scope - short barrel" deal. The other build will be cut to the minimum length. Any ideas on the ballistic detriment, or if you would loose much existing performance at minimum length?

Very nice setup Hunter!

I think cutting the barrel back will affect your distance shots, I recall reading a review on the SA Socom II (16" barrel I think) and it out reaches a 16" 5.56 carbine, but the full length barrel will get the better accuracy.

I myself am going through the same dilemma myself of whether to cut the barrel or leave it so.

I am soooo jealous of you cluster rail. I have to ask, was it easy to get and do you have another one??? :)

No luck on the extra parts. The two I have, I've been sitting on for quite a long time, and you don't see them come up very often at all.

It is to bad Springfield is so tight with them. I can't speak for the quality for optic mounting because I haven't put a round down with one installed, but they can't be that bad of a mount if Springfield has them locked down.

LOVE the way it looks right now!

i wouldnt change a thing on it, but thats just me.

can the vltor rail be used without the bottom half, without losing any rigidity??

The top can be used alone. The top attaches to the rifle at three different contact points. The bottom half hinges from the top at the front, then locks up to the top at the side clips.

You can remove the bottom half in a couple of seconds, leaving the top half with your 3,9, and 12 o'clock rails.

I've seen pics of the top half being used with a JAE stock, pretty cool setup.

I must say that I am rather envious of you because you will never see one come up for sale (well, not that I've seen anyways)

Very very nice rig :)
