I have the possibility of picking up a 94 in .307 win and am wondering if anyone has had any experience with them. I know ammo is tough to come by and expensive once found, so I guess I could use this as an excuse to get into reloading. Before I do though, I'd need to know that this rifle would be worht it. Has anyone ever used it on game; deer or moose namely? Any advice or info would be greatly appreciated.:D

Cheers, Stefan

Win 94 in .307 Win

The idea is to get .308 Win ballistics from a Win 94 lever. Still, one is hampered by having to use flat or round nose bullets in the tube magazine.

Unless the price is way right or you just want to have a Win 94 in a something less than run of the mill cartridge, if you really want a lever gun that can launch .308 Win why not go with a Browning BLR or Savage 99 in .308 Win?

That said, the .307 should be fine hunting the game mentioned if the shooter does his part.... ;)

Their ok, but the waters would be better in a lever gun, or a marlin over the 94.
Their are better game calibers in the 94.
I peeled the extractor back once, and could extract the case with my finger. But heck , go for it, just did not do what I wanted, and a pos note , it was accurate with Hornady 170's.

I'm just wondering how a 120gr Flatpoint at 2600fps is better than a 170gr Flatpoint at 2500fps?

They are good rifles and it is a fine cartridge if enjoy it within it's limits. Lots of power for <250yd shots.

i owned one for years. its a 30 30 on steriods. flat points limit it but for 200 yds or less i would say its quite effective. my winn would shoot 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 all day with a 4x scope and speer 170 fp over varget..

Why not just buy a BLR or M99 in 308 and forget about the weird cartridges? Both of these rifle would allow you to use pointy bullets.

It's not like brass and factory ammo would abound in 307.

Amen that! I own two 99's in .308, a 99C with removable 4 round magazine (my primary hunting rifle) and a 99E with the built in 5 round rotary magazine (backup rifle).

They're accurate (dropped an elk at 500 yards last fall), and a .308 being a common round makes finding ammo easy and reloading a whole lot cheaper than an uncommon calibre.

Sounds like a neat find in a gun. As for taking down animals, You should be able to do as much with it as you would a .308 the balistics adn down range energy are comperable. You might want to take a look at this site: ht tp://www.hornady.com/media/ftx_load_data/307_win_ftx.pdf

I don't know much about the FTX line of bullets. But from what I've read there are huge advantages with them and not so many down sides. It gets you closer to the BC of a spire point bullet in a tubular magazine.

The 307 is a good round in the 94. Now with Hornady making its rubber nose pointed bullets available for handloading, the 307 is going to come alive. The 160 grain Hornady will be able to be driven fast enough that any moose or elk won't know that they weren't shot with a .308 or .30-06, except you get to hunt with a model 94 which may be the ultimate short, handy hunting package.

Just three quick questions for you winchester 307 fans:

1) How much more expensive is the ammo for a 307 than say a 308 or 30-06?

2) Is there as wide a variety of ammo for the 307 as say, the 308 or 30-06?

3) Does a winchester 94 in 307 still throw empties up and back (into your jacket) like the 30-30 model 94's always did?

1. no difference if you reload. If you don't reload don't get a .307 (maybe consider archery)
2. no.
3. no. Google "Angle Eject".

Sure you can. I owned a Sako Finnwolf that was twice the rifle an 88 will ever be. And an 88 is a fantastic rifle!

For the record, I like the Finnwolf & the 88 as well, but if you ever have to take a Finnwolf apart....!!!!!! Whooey!! What a complex bit of work! Trust those Finns to complicate what could have been a relatively simple design. Sorry to go off topic, but had to mention this one! Eagleye.
