307 win, or 30-30?

I think 2 Winchester 94s for $500 is a great deal - mind you, you may get the lever gun bug and rue the day you ever laid eyes on lever guns.

Lever guns Anonymous is always available for the permanently afflicted CGN lever gun nut. Ask us how we know!

I had one of those 307's. Sorry I got rid of it. Ammo is not that hard to find and I've even seen brass for it. I didn't reload then. Buy both, get into reloading anyway. the new leverrevolution ammo helps out the 30-30 too. I wound up switching to a Savage 99 in 308. Very similar to the 307. I also scoped that one with see through mounts and fibre optic sights so I had the best of both worlds. Where I hunt there is thick bush but it can open up onto huge swamps where shots can get longer than open sights are good for. Dropped at least 4 deer with the 307 and got the deer in my avatar with the 99. The 99's are a nice carrying gun too and the C's have clips which allows pointy bullets.

Buy both...that's a really good deal for $500! If you decide the .307 is too much trouble, because of it's "less popular" calibre then sell it on the EE here for $500 or so. :)

My .307 shoots about one MOA out to 200 yds. Many kinds of ammo is great but you will only be sighted in for one. Not necessarily interchangeable at the last minute without resighting the gun. FInd a nice load that the rifle likes factory or homemade and have a bunch on hand regardless which you get. Both for $500 is a steal. In fact, I'll take them for that. :)

The 307 was a great idea but came 30yrs too late.Had it been offererd in 1952(instead of 1982) when the 308 was initialy introduced things would have been a whole lot different. Back in 1952 that kind of perfomance in a tube fed lever would have sold in great numbers, and today there would be ammo made for it by everyone. IMO it won't be long this ammo isn't going to be produced by anyone. Those who do have a 307 might want to stock up on ammo and save brass because it won't be produced forever. It is already on the endangered list.

I read a retrospective by a gunwriter a few years back about the Model 94. (May have been John Wootters). The author said something like "The introduction of the Big Bore in 1978 dragged Winchester kicking and screaming into the 1950's."

It has been my experience that ammo for the .307 is not that hard to find. Most Canadian Tire stores don't have it, but virtually any gun shop I've been in has a couple boxes. It's not much harder to feed than a .250 Savage, for example.

And we all know he's gonna buy both rifles, right?

The only large calibre rifle I own is the .307
The only ammunition you can buy for it these days is the factory Winchester 180 gr.
LeB's and E.Epps carry it. Box of 20 was $38.75 plus tax last time I looked.
I have about 80 rounds and I have some old 150 gr. factory loads as well.
As a matter of self-respect, I don't think Winchester will ever stop producing ammo.
I have also seen ads for new .307 brass here and there. Although I don't reload myself, I've been saving all my brass since 2003.
Most people have trouble parting with their Model 94's.... I'm one of those!

Spring for a BLR in 308.
This, or a Savage 99. Both of these choices offer the way better 308 with pointy bullets.

I wouldn't touch a 307 with a 10' pole. Ammo & brass is too hard to find, plus there are limited bullet options for the handloader as compared to the 308.
