.308 150 grain for black bear

9.3Mauser is on the right track.

A premium bullet will do more good than simply upping the bullet weight.

Hell my bear gun for this season is a .270 and I will likely be shooting 130-140 grain bullets, but have no doubts it will do the job.

I don't recall anyone recommending a magnum in this thread, but using a decent bullet is just common sense.

10/4...I never used Federal Blue box, but I understand they are using Speer's Hot Core bullets in them...These are similar to Rem Core Lokt, which I have used to take most of my bear...I don't recall ever recovering a bullet..

There's nothing wrong with blue box, for sure, I've dropped game up to 2200+lbs with them elsewhere. They're as good as anything else and better than some. If I have the choice, it's a TSX, but that's no longer a religion for me.

could i use .308 150 grain bullet for black bear? if so can i use federal blue box ammo or would i have to get something more higher end like gamekings, accubond, nosler partition?

just to be sure that i ll work. i used the same blue box for a 300 Savage and no bears or caribous were able to tell the brand of the ammo nor i was able to recover one bullet so yes of course it will work perfectly if you do your part ... my choice will be today a 165 grains in Accubond or N Partition but it s only me.

thanks for the advice guys i appreciate, tomorow first thing in the morning i will take my 30-06 and sight it in with 180 grain federal blue, i will also take my mosin nagant which has a 2-7x scout scope and sight it in with 200 grain scbs ammo, i cut the barrel down by 5 inches and recrowned with dremel so we will see how accurate it is. Finally I will have 3 guns to choose from 308 with 150gr, 30-06 with 180gr and mosin nagant with 200 gr. Surely I will be in a dilemma on which one to take lol....these 1st world problems some of us face

I've killed a 2200 pound bull at my buddies farm with a .22 short right between the eyes, stone cold didn't know what hit him.You don't always get that perfect shot in a hunting situation,I have used the .308 for a long while,i like the berger bullets in .308 168 grain.I shoot al kinds of loads at the ranfge, but for hunting the berger bullets have never left me wondering.

There is a lot wrong with this post and a couple glaring problems but I'm just going to chalk it up to youth and exuberance. I have killed a good many domestic stock and I know for a FACT that a 22 short will not kill a bull or even a smallish cow with a shot between the eyes, into the thickest part of a bulls skull!!! A 22 LR high velocity won't do it, takes 'em off their feet but does not even come close to dead. It does however let you get close enough to tuck one in behind the ear. I can also tell you for a FACT that 22 LR standard velocity will not penetrate the center forehead of a 15 1/2 hand 1100 lb horse, but a 243 will.
As far as Berger bullets being an all around hunting bullet, well..................................!!! I would have to ask the extent of your experience base with the Berger bullets?

you are wrong about the cattle and the 22LR. or maybe not on re-reading what you said, you don't shoot them between the eyes, but about 2" up when they are looking right at you.

x2

never put down a mature bull but seen first hand a standard velocity .22LR put down a steer...numerous times. I was always told to imagine a line from it's ear to it's eye (roughly). Where the lines intersect is where you place the bullet. They've always hit the floor...

My butcher here kills a lot of animals with the 22LR round.
But when he has a big bull or even a heavy steer, out comes the 30-30.
He told me he cannot rely on the 22 for those big animals.

erring on the side of caution is usually a good idea. if you miss with your first shot, you are going to have a real rodeo on your hands.
