I know 180's are getting on the heavy side for the 308, but I didn't expect that they would be inacurate. Yet both of the 308's we have are crap with 180's. 3" to 4" groups best so far. Same guns are sub 2" with 165's
Does anyone have a 308 that prefers the heavy stuff?
What is it?
What load?

I shoot 180 Hornady Spire Points in my 760 Carbine. Hot load warning ----> 40/3031.

Never checked the velocity but shoots about 1.5" @ 100yds.

I use 150gr. Speer Grand Slams in my BLR 308.....It's killed moose, elk, deer, and the odd coyote or two...Works just fine.....If you want to throw a 180 gr. bullet you might want to go to a bigger case....180's are a little on the heavy side for the 308winny IMHO.

I have a friends 99C Sav here that I want to try shooting some 180,s in, as reccommended by people here on CGN. It will not shoot the 150 bullets I am trying to feed it .

maybe change the colour of that 308 to make it look meaner
To explain that comment, one of the 308's is my nice blonde Savage 99, the other is my wife's BLR. Niether like the heavy stuff.
I don't really need the heavies, but as I have some, it would be nice If they shot decent.
Thanks for the load SC. So far, I've tried H380, H, and IMR4895, 4064 and WC845. Worked up each, but no good shooters.

i've never used anything but remmy 180's in my savage 99- 45 grains of 748, r/p cases, cci magnum primer- i regularly get 1 inch 5 round groups at 200, properly bagged- it's a 70's vintage c series a- can't say as to100 as i've never used it that short- and a 3-9 x32 scope- i've never considered 150s as i live near the eastern slopes of the rockies and it's bear /cougar country-

The best accuracey out of my 308 BLR has been factory cheapo winchester 180gr power points. 1 to less than 2" groups. I've just began doing some reloading and have only tryed 180gr Interbonds. Not a good looking proposition so far  Its hard to close the bolt and acuuracy isn't good.....

"...180's are getting on the heavy side for the 308..." Who told you that? You can go up to 200 grains in a .308. IMR4064 is indeed great powder for the .308. Seems to be more consistent than anything else. Works well in .30-06 too.

John Y Cannuck,

Marg has shot 45 gr of 4320 with 180 partitions in her Ruger RSI for years and it consistently shoots under 1 1/2" at 100 yd.

Give it a try, and let us know how it works.

I have no 4320 to try right now Ted, but I'll put it in my book as a good one to try, thanks.

1-12" twist is common in the 308 and that would make 180 gr. about the practical heaviest bullet that will shoot.

My friends M7 308 will shoot the Remington Cor Lokt 180 factory load into 2" at 100 yards, but 165 gr. Partition or Interbond handloads over RL15 shoot 1".

Pick a premium 165 and you'll out-penetrate most generic vanilla 180's on bigger game. If the critter is big, go to a most stout bullet like an X, instead of a heavier one.

I have two 308s, both with 1:12 twist.

They will both shoot the 200 gr Speer spitzer well, but not the 200 gr Barnes X that is almost a quarter of an inch longer.

One the other hand, my Husqvarna 308 Norma Mag with a 1:12 twist handles that bullet just fine. That extra 400 fps makes the difference.
