308 180grain accuracy

My model 88 will shoot Factory 180 grain winchester silver tips into 1.5" groups consistantly(3 shot groups)(I sometimes wonder why I bother to reload for this gun while these loads are available commercially)???? :roll:
 
according to the chart i have, you only need a twist of 13.2 to stabilize a 180- but anything heavier also begins to penetrate into the powder charge

soooo, I shoot 180 NP HE Federals.
I'm a fan of ballistic tips, but for moose this setup had to be changed.
Might have gone with the 165-175 Barnes from Black hills, but now is too late.

the accuracy is not too bad, considering the HE markings on it

Hey, Death-junky. Yuo're no supposed touse 180's in the m305. they reccomend 150. I wouldn't do it with more than 165s if I'd like that rifle.
 
I get great results with sierra 180 flat base (#2150) & reloader 15. Try this before you give up. I found the sierra to be far more accurate than the hornady.

My 308 Tikka loves 180 gr Nosler Partitions pushing 2500 fps I doubt the Deer will though :twisted: :lol:

43.3 grains of 4064 with 180 Nosler Partitions, chrony 2430+-
getting warm though, my manual shows 43.5 as max. I get slight pressure signs at that so I backed off .2 so build up to it :wink:
Got the Loads from Crashman with a Rifle, I just tinkered with it and up'd the charge a hair 8)
FWIW: my Rifle wears the Factory 22-1/2" barrel with an 11" twist.
 
2430 isn't all that fast for a 22.5" tube

factory Remington 180 CL's chrony'd @ 2585 fps out of my friends 20" Model Seven

safely got 2680 fps with 165 gr. Interbonds over 45.0 grs. RL15



deer won't notice though :lol:
 
Well, I have only used Hornady so far, maybe it's time to switch bullets. Nothing else seems to make any sense.
The BLR is Max load sensitive too. Minimum loads seem to be about all she wants.
Maybe it's time I slugged the barrel and took a chamber cast.

I know... I have tried other powders that gave higher velocities with the 180's but did not have the accuracy I was getting at 2430fps with the 4064 :D I actually prefer H335 and use it for my 110 grain Varmint loads in the 308, just haven't played with it enough with the heavies, another winter time project perhaps.
For now I'll stick to the 4064, shoots well & should do the trick :wink:
 
I just shot my BLR this weekend. Winchester Super X 180 grain shot very good groups. under 2 " from the bench with sand bags. The gun was purchased in the early 70's.
