Remove the decapping rod or leave it in and size as normal. the primers will pop out the same as dead ones.

Right on. I thought it sounded like my problem.

I have deprimed a number of live primers and as long as you go slowly they are fine. Still, if you can remove the priming rod, I'm sure that's a better thing to do.
