I would like a good shooting rifle and I don't want to spend a ton. I would like an AICS just because I have always wanted an aics.
Should I get the SPS tactical 308 and just swap the stock for the aics?
The action and barrel of the police model arent better are they?
(I don't really want to get the milspec and then sell the stock and everything, and I prefer a black finish). Plus it would involve more money.

Should I get a short barrel (20 inch tac) or go longer?

Twist rate seems to be 1 in 12, fine?

Hey bud. I find there's nothing wrong with an Sps. I have a left hand 223 and after a bedding job and load development it wil, shoot 4 rounds covered by a dime.... I can never get the fifth on in the group guess I get to excited. It really depends on the intended purpose. The 1:12 twist probably won't like heavier bullets used for long range shooting. Chances are it will stablize the 168gr bullets. Which can be used in long range shooting. Search on here "what i did this canada day" my buddy has his lil 308 on the range with me and it shoots quite well

I would take a look at the REM LTR? BTW I'm "one of those guys" that believes that a 20" barrel is more than enough, YMMV. I have a AICS in .223 with a Stiller Tac 30 action. AICS is a "heavy" stock. I'm getting to the point where I like the "ergonomics" of the McMillan A5 better. If you want a "thumb hole" or the AICS "kool aid" I hear ya!. If you want a "folder, take a look at a Manners TF1-4. Give Casey at TacOrd a shout, he can give you some advice. He's been to the REM factory and seen the "police" model being made, IIRC.

or since I am too greedy, I could get a savage 10 fcp-k in 308? comes with the brake and accutrigger already, and accustock.
No real mods necessary I guess.

Could get a 308 and just be done with it for quite cheap I guess.

Anywhere they have the 10 fcp-k in stock? 308? opinions?

I say get the SPS and rebarrel it with a bartlien or one of the really good barrels out there. Including rebarreling cost you will not be far off the police model but it will shoot better in the end.

The 1 in 12 twist of the P is right where it needs to be and will stabilize heavy bullets just fine. Barrel length affects final RPM as well, the longer tube has more dwell time with the bullet and will reach adequate RPM to stabilize heavier bullets. the faster twists are for shorter barrels to make up the RPM difference. The P will also achieve a higher velocity which helps as well. Remember, the 5R has an 11.25" twist even with .300wm and they shoot 175 SMK's and similar very very well. Is that slight velocity increase going to be of much help to you? Not really. It only becomes and advantage when rifle, shooter and ammo are stretched to the fringe of their limits i.e. competition. For anything less, the short barrel isn't giving up anything worth worrying about especially considering heavier loads give up less velocity to a shorter barrel. If you were concerned with driving 155s to 3000 fps+ then the SPS might not be your best choice but for learning on an affordable platform that can grow with you its got everything you need. They shoot well and the short barrel is easier to tune your loads for. In the end you wont go wrong with either, and the benefits of each are minimal if not negligible for what youre looking to do. Just my 2c.

Oh well it seems that I am not quite ready to dump the money on an aics so I am getting a 308 700 police with a vortex viper pst 6-24.
I'll probably get a coretac clamp on brake or something on it.

300 win mag is "cooler", but in the end, it hits too hard for me and I don't shoot that far.

If I ever feel like the 308 is not enough, I'll just sell the 308 and get a 300 win I guess.
As for 223, I will just mount a scope on my su16F right now.
Can't afford 3 rifles right now so 1 is better than nothing, and I have no precision bolt action, so 308 will be the best "good for anything" rifle right now.

.308 is probably your best option for getting into precision. Tons of good info, components, easy to load for and a good performer. Skim bed that P, work up a proven load and you're off to the races with a known performer. And if I can, I'd like to steer you away from Vortex. They have pretty good glass but too many failures and tracking issues. If its all you can afford, there are better options in the price range. In the end its your money, and you may luck out and get a good one. Keep us posted on how things go!

aics on hold for a while anyway... too much money right now. Going to spend a bit over 3k on some optics and a rifle, so I probably will not buy much more until next spring.
Might get an xl650 this winter if I shoot alot of pistol indoors.

I am running an SPS right now.... 308 pushing the 178gr AMAX, stabilized perfectly. With 26" of pipe I am getting 2600 fps with 42.1 gr Varget. Gets the job done just fine out to 1000 meters.

My 1-12" SPS Varmint Stabilizes 175 GR SMK's no problem. Haven't shot the Hornady 178's, but I think they would probably work. I also have mine in an AICS and like it quite a bit for shooting, though it would be a bear to carry it anywhere.

I own the 6-24 viper PST FFP on my Sps tactical with a 20" 1-12. And it works just fine, I love the scope so far, and having the FFP is just awesome! Plus with that warranty, if it screws up. Send it back and get it fixed/new one.
