308 AMAX bullet in 30-06?

Some really good advice here for you. I to am relatively new to reloading but I have used rifles as part of my job for nearly 30 years. I have developed a proper attitude for safety around them glad to see your willing to ask rather then go ahead and try it without thinking f he consequences. I have a 3006 axis that my prefered round is the 168 grain AMAX. i find it gives me good all around accuracy and knockdown power at the end of its flight. the 175 is right in there also. The issue that some ppl find is that "IT KICKS LIKE A MULE" well thats a matter of what you are trying to put downrange. for my friends and family i bring out to the range i also load a bunch of 110 grain rounds. I have found with the 168 grain amax with H4350 i prefer 57 grains of powder. I find it gives me no flash and burns clean. i have pushed it to 700m to knock steel targets. i cant say what the kinetic energy level is at that range so thats all I can say as to that. Hi dfraser, i strongly recommend that you get the hornady reloading manual, it has everthing you'll want to know about reloading that .308 178gr AMAX for your 30-06. you're already loading that bullet in a 308Win, so i really hope you already have the hornady manual. be safe, have a great day, Dogger

7.62x54r reloading uses what size of bullet? Barrel nominally is .311 depending on the specific rifle. So would you use a .308 30 cal or .312 like the .303 bullet?

It pays to slug the bore on a 7.62x 54 Russian as the bore diameters can vary. Some of the Finnish barrels are quite tight and shoot a .308 diameter bullet very well. I have a Finnish M27 that is a real performer with a .308 bullet.

Yah I am in the "antsy Homer dancing in circles" phase of looking at a Mosin, but I want to be able to hunt with it. there does not seem to be a lot of available ammunition in hunting bullet types available. There are a few, so just looking at what is available to get rolled. I have not looked hard but if hunting bullets are available in both sizes, then I am fairly confident that I will feel comfortable since I can get some rolled to ensure a supply.

i would tend to disagree somewhat with that statement.

could you fire a .312 bullet in a .308 bore? definitely but not in a perfectly safe manner. You would have to do some serious work in determining your powder load. the boost in chamber pressures would be pretty impressive.

Before anything else you would want to slug your barrel and find your actual bore caliber. For example my No4 enfield slugs (by British standards) at a true .303" but by american spec it actually slugs at .317" (lands vs. grooves) so when i fire a .312 bullet it expands neatly into the over-sized grooves and i get pretty incredible accuracy for an enfield. Firing a .312 through a .308 (grooves) your would not have this extra space and the bullet would have to elongate as it entered the barrel thus substantially increasing the chamber pressure. (so unpredictable that even quickLOAD wont try to estimate it) also my load data for my 303 is calculated on a .303" lands and .312"+ grooves. .308 (30-06/30-30 etc) is calculated on a .308" bullet in a .308" bore.
