I'm purchasing a CZ Ranger in 308 and looking for a "cheap' range ammo and some recommended ammo for deer if I go that route.
This is my first 308 rifle btw
Also is 7.62 useable in 308 or is it like the .223/5.56 thing where the .223 works in 5.56 but not always the other way around?
Thanks

The .308/7.62x51 is interchangeable, unlike the .223/5.56. I look for deals daily on .308 and if you want to buy some affordable but high quality range ammo, look at the Hirtenberger, 7.62x51. You can get it just under $0.80/per round in bulk. I've been able to find deals and stock up on Remington UMC 308 Win/7.62 at around $0.75/round.

I can't recommend any hunting ammo sorry.

if you buy bulk 308 ammo and its FMJ
dont dont go hunting with it,its an offence to use on big game in sask

you need to figure out the rate of twist on the cz then buy the appropriate grain of bullet thats likely to suit
the barrel twist.
my 308 has a 10.1 twist and likes 165gr and 180gr bullets

Range Ammo

I really like PMC 308win $19.95 / 1.00 per round @ SFRC

AL Flaherty's - Winchester Service Grade 7.62x51 $15.99 / .80 cents per round...Sold out at the moment, cleaned them out lol.

.75 cents wow that's a good deal, I've never seen them cheaper then .80 cents

I'll reply to the first part of your post with a question. Since you are buying a nice rifle and probably spending good money for it, do you really want to bargain hunt for the cheapest ammo to feed it? That said, I buy generic quality .308 ammo whenever, wherever I can find it, and I have a so-so quality "fun gun" that I bought for the express purpose of running a high volume of this ammo. I agree with the comment about choosing bullet weight appropriate to the barrel twist rate. Mine is 1:10 inches. You may need to experiment with your CZ Ranger.

If you can find it, buy Igman ammo in either 150 or 180 grain PSP. The price is closer to what you describe as "cheap," and I have found it to be accurate and dependable. I have also had good success with bulk Russian and PR of China (Norinco) ammo, all FMJ, that runs about 80 cents. These would give you an alternative to Hirtenberger.

I would think any of the brand name 308 hunting ammo would be good, I would try some different brands and see how it groups in your rifle. I've had good luck with Federal Premium, but I would imagine there are a lot of good brands. I don't think it has to be anything too fancy for deer. Shot placement is more important.

If your going cheap bulk blaster norinco or hirtenberger you can usually find some cheap unopened crates on EE sometimes for like 50-60 cents a round once in a while close to you, but just wait for sales once in a while you hit it big best I could find this year was some magtech at 58 cents a round to my door sales over but brass cased non magnetic sealed primer and bullet can’t go wrong.

Deer aren’t particularly tough to dispatch. At 308 velocities standard bullets will work just fine. Winchester or Remington 150 - 180 grain at Canadian tire, etc, is a reasonably affordable alternative and always available.

As others have said for sending lots of lead down range bulk ammo will likely be the best option.
