Rifle build

You're missing the point. I already have on hand everything I need to put together a rifle. I just need a barrel. This rifle project will be in line with Hunter Bench Rest equipment rules. I'm limited to how heavy a barrel I can get as the stock I have will only allow a light contour and therefore will be several pounds lighter than what is allowed but it won't be used for serious competition anyway so it doesn't really matter. The Icon has intrigued me in the past though. Perhaps another time I will give it a second look.

hend 238 You are doing the right thing with a solid action, and a quality barrel, get a "good smith" Mic Mcfee comes to mind as I have seen his work and he makes fine barrels. There are some other great smiths as well check around, I have seen work by Denis Sorenson very top notch truing up a Rem 700.and I have friends that have him chamber guns and all very pleased.
Your barrel choice will not give you the performance to be a top notch hunter class rifle, you will have to much barrel heat with such a small contour and 22" is a poor combination for a .308win at long distances, I have seen many .308 win with 26" barrels at 900m they just don't do well, you need the longer barrel to get speed to shoot into winners circle at 900m
But since you are happy to 500y get a much heavyer contour at 25 or 26" and it will be good, use this .308 as beanfield hunter and pick up yourself a 50to 250 yard hunting rifle.
your stock weight could be a problem max weight for Hunter is 10lbs
Info for your barrel from benchrest central on rukles for hunter class

A hunter Rifle barrel must not be less than 18 inches long. The barrel shall have a diameter at and not more than 4 inches ahead of the bolt face, of not more than 1.250 inches and a diameter at any point 4 inches ahead of the bolt face not greater than would be defined by a straight taper between such point 4 inches in front of the bolt face at 1.250 inches and the muzzle at .750 inch diameter at 26 inches from the bolt face. Original factory issue barrels need not meet these specifications. However, any rechambering, rebarreling with new or original barrel would then require that the factory issue barrel meet the above taper specifications.
