Thanks for all the replies guys, some great info and ###y pics.
I was reading some reviews on the R-25 and it actually looks like it's a pretty darned good and accurate rifle with the right ammo. The DMPS looks good as well, I almost bought one of those a few years back in .223 and they seem to be in my price range. My other alternative is to scavenge parts here and there and build one, which is also tempting but given how much time I have for tinkering I think that's not really an option for me these days.

Here's another question: Should I really be concerned whether the rifle I get has a heavy barrel? Other folks have told me that a normal barreled M14 would be good for this as well.

Remington R15 and R25 are excellent value for the money.
I owned the R15 for quite some time, and it was about as accurate as you can get out of an AR platform without any load development.

The R-25 is a DPMS rifle, just rebadged to Remington since they are part of the same group.
The issues with the R-25 are the camo paint job. It flakes after time, and most prefer black. If you plan on repainting them then you may as well just buy a DPMS it'll work out to the same money. If you like the camo then it's a very good buy.
Heavy barrel vs non heavy barrel. It depends. The heavier barrel will shoot more while staying cooler. It prevents barrel whip etc. The accuracy of the AR-10 relies on the same principles that Bench rest shooters have been using for ages. Free float barrels and heavier barrels (providing they are accurate barrels) will lead to more accuracy in the AR system. But.. there's always a price. Weight, length etc.
Do you need a heavy barrel? Probably not. If you're using it mostly for varmint/accuracy then yes I'd recommend it. For general shooting and something you'll be shooting off hand then no. The R-25 barrel seems to be a good compromise since it's meant to be used for hunting.

Hk MR308
The HK MR308 ate very accurate rifle, I put 5 round into a 50cal hole at 100 meter, very controllable rifle to shoot, but it got a short barrel16.5", if it was 20" I would of keep her.That was shot with a 10fix supersniper scope, not the best, but it does the job.

Auto-loading you could go with the 4x4 fence post known as the Springfield M1A or the #### extension known as the Keltec RFB.
M1A can be made pretty accurate the RFB is a close quarters rifle not a precision rifle. A piston driven rifle will not be as accurate as a free-floating bolt action or direct impingement free-floating AR-10.
