308 AR... Looking for Options

A Load that works well for 24" SS 1:11.25
175SMK 2.8 OAL, 43.4 Varget, BR2 primers and Federal brass.

That seems a pretty hot load for any auto loader - what's your velocity?l

The brilliance in the LMT is the barrel change design - I've not looked at lightening it, but the caliber options blow the others away.

Sorry I don't have a chrono. 43 grains in `175 SMk is roughly the same as the Federal Gold target ammo. Not that hot. Lots of guys I know go for 44 of varget. That's with a 2.8 OAL using Federal brass. I'd guestimate it will be around 2650-2680 with a 24" barrel. The 2600 mark seems to be the Federal gold standard velocity out of a 26" barrel. I've shot it through two AR10(t) DND rifles with no signs of any problems. Shots very nicely, cycles normal, brass is ok and no signs of primer issues. Hodson's I recall lists 45 as max. But I don't think I'd go higher than 44 myself. But as always start lower and work your way up.

I like the monolithic rail with the LMT as well.

NTM, beautiful rifle and great picture. Sorry forgot to mention that.

Actually the 155 's should run better out of a 1:11.25. Technically...but they don't on my mws.
The 11.25 twist prefers 168 grain a-maxs.

I've got a 20" 5r ss barrel on the lmt as of 3000 rounds ago actually.
It started life with the 16" cl though.
Seen here with the 20" 5r barrel:

Looks good! Where can you find the 20" 5R SS barrels for the MWS these days? I would love to change out the 16" CL barrel on mine.

Questar was the only one that I know of.

One other thing I'd like to add about the LMT MWS. In 16" configuration the KAC will shoot with lighter recoil as others have stated. The KAC uses a rifle length gas system for it's 16" version while the LMT uses a carbine length system. However this isn't an issue with the 20" barrel on the LMT MWS. Although heavier than a KAC would be, you do get the monolithic upper/solid upper receiver. Plus you can change out that barrel in 2 minutes if you want.

This is seriously making me think about selling my 223 ar and moving into a 308 platform. Would help with standardizing all my rifle calibers to 308 which I was thinking about doing.

Would the armalite ar10a4 spr make a good all arounder?

It would work. But... I have to say I prefer the AR10 for it's accuracy/DM/Precision role. For carbine stuff I'd stick with the 223. I say this because that rifle won't work as an accuracy rifle. Expect the 308 equivalent to a regular CL barreled AR15 carbine. You just get more womp. Or instead of "bang, sproiiiinnngg", you get "bang, Kaa Chummmm". Harder on the pocket book though. Without a loud muzzle brake you'll get a fair amount of muzzle flip and recoil compared to the 223.

If you're looking for a true all around. Then the LMT MWS. Later get a SS 20" barrel for it. Takes 2 minutes to change out. You can go back and forth between that 16" CL barrel and the SS one if you want. The problem is it's not cheap. It's probably cheaper to get a DM style AR10 and keep your 223 carbines.

Right now the one I really like for cost effectiveness and performance is the Armalite SASS. If I didn't already have 99 percent of the parts for my SASS I'd get one of the ones on the irunguns. It's a 20" barrel though. DM style not carbine.

I was looking at the 20" SPR, not the 16" carbine. But I like the idea of a .308 carbine though. maybe get both lol. But anyways what groups could i expect from the 20" AR10A4? IRUNGUNS has a stainless model (Not the NM model) as well, how would that perform?
