We shot at my hardox 500 1/2'' plate today, and at 750M, the 308 barely "greys off" the white paint, and the 338 LM barely removes a small chunk the diameter of the bullet.

very hard to see hits.

Is the paint too good or what? I think it's white antirust paint or something, nothing extra fancy.

And at 1000m, my 308 barely left a trace on another plate with yellow "super visible" paint.

What do you use that allows a nice view of hits at those distances?

Maybe I should paint the plate black with some good oil paint, and then buy some sort of cheap matte white paint that would easily flake off? Or maybe use some indoor white latex paint over a black oil coating so it can just get scraped off by the bullet?

First time shooting 750 and 1000m, was fun, too bad it started raining. Hard with a 308 at 1000 with irregular wind though. The 338 LM didnt seem to bother as much.

Thanks

Enamel spray gloss white or yellow paint. The generic stuff you can find at Can tire, walmart and any hardware store. Most times, it doesn't have a brand per se... just says enamel paint on the can.

Cheap, dries fast, blows off very nicely.

Check Home Depot . They had a sale here last fall on blaze orange rattle cans for $2.50 . Easy to see and flakes off well . I bought 10 cans .

That's the trouble with quality steel for targets, hard to see. I like to use softer steel, preferably quite rusted, and the crappiest indoor paint I can find. Blows right off the rust usually. Of course, the targets don't last as long, and require repainting more frequently....

I also wondered about trying some kind of coating, like that rubbery stuff you can paint on a cement sidewalk, in black, then some poor, light-colored paint over that....

the absolute cheapest white latex, usually in the mistint or dented bin, and don't try and go for a professional paint job as you don't want the bond to be great you want it to flake
i have seen guys wrap their steel tightly in plastic garbage bags and then paint it white and have a cheap "shoot and see" target as well

I use flouro orange works great.

Same here. I use the fluorescent colors on my targets. Orange, yellow and pink all work great. I quit using white because it was hard to see. If the poster is looking to see his impacts, why not make your own shoot and see targets. That's what I do for anything 500 yards and more. Just get a fluorescent poster board paper, lay down a layer or two of clear tape over it and then spray paint it white or any other color to contrast. Works amazingly well. Anything over 2 layers of tape though and the holes are hard to see. If you're going for distance, just use one layer.

thats 1 km away.......i can barely see a car that far away, you guys eatin alot of carrots or what???

The impacts were "seeable" at 992 meters throught scope.
The fluogreen plate was not to the naked eyes.

here is the plate (mine was at 750m)
308 hits are barely visible (gray splatter).
338 LM hits flaked some paint, but nothing huge.

I think I will try the fluo paint, worked really well on mush plate and you can see it easily at 1km+.
We could have seen it easily at 1400 meters also in the scopes.

Oh and that tasco spotting scope is a piece of ####, cant see anything in that, I could see much better in my 8-32 sightron s3 than that POS 20-60x thing. as clear as a bottle of coke, or looking through a turkey.

yup, could see hits at 1km on mush plate in scopes.

here is a pic of the spot
there is a valley that you do not see on the pic so it looks closer than it is.

Years ago, we had a big sheet of metal we would pattern our shotguns on. Paint it with "whitewash" the stuff we painted the inside of the barn with annualy. One shot from a shotgun, and every pellet hit was very visible. Now I use Hunter Orange on my Gongs and reactive targets.
