308 Bolt Acton - 14 in Barrel

Hi, quick question. Does anyone have a 308 bolt action with a short barrel (14-16 in), and how does it shoot?

As in what? It will be just as accurate as a longer barrelled rifle, velocity will be down a fair bit and it will be as loud as a field artillery piece. There are lots of 16" and shorter barrelled AR's in .308 and they work just fine.

I would be more concerned with how the rifle would balance with a short barrel like that than anything else.

Right now just curious about general impressions. Will be a heavy contour barrel, so should balance all right. Is meant to be my bush gun for hunting in grown in areas. Will be loud for sure.

As produced at the factory???

Please tell us who is offering this?

Becauce:
If I'm not mistaken, unless it comes from the factory with this length of barrel, is it not considered illegally modified, and thus Prohibated??

If you order the barrel blank short originally (from the manufacture) then it is legal. It would be illegal if it was a normal, 18+ inch barrel, that you or a gun smith cut down.

Had a 14-inch .308 barrel for a T/C Encore for awhile. It was very accurate, one of the best barrels I had for that gun. Unbelievable muzzle blast, extremely uncomfortable to shoot for that reason. The only reason I kept it as long as I did was that my granddaughter loved going out with me at dusk and watching the humongous fireballs it produced.:D

If you want a short barrelled bolt rifle (SBR) in .30 cal. why not consider .300 Blackout? A number of board members here, including myself, are doing just that. The cartridge is ideally suited to SBR's and you won't have the deafening and obnoxious blast of a larger cartridge.

It can be done legally if it is done by a licensed manufacturer. Not many of the these around, ATRS is one.

Thanks for all the input. I can live with the noise and fireball as it won't be my target/long range rifle. As long as I'm zeroed, I'm happy. Will be handy to throw in the boat or on the snow machine when hunting is #2 priority for the day.

Look for an older Remington Mowhawk mod 600 or 660. The bolt handle is bent forward because the action is set back. Had one some years ago with a peep sight installed, for a camp gun, barked pretty loud but is a very versitile cal when hand loaded.

18.5" is plenty handy for a rifle. 14" would be downright OBNOXIOUS to shoot and handle like a pc of firewood.

...... but don't believe us, go ahead and buy one and find out first hand for yourself.

I was looking for something along the same lines, either a ruger compact or to be honest was going to have something cut down like a 7600.

Then I found a 7600 308 police model pump rifle with 16.5" factory barrel on the EE, so I bought it. It will be my new bushwhacking carbine/back-up rifle.

It has combat sights, so I might have to change that up.

I did also order a Ruger compact in 6.8 rem spc anyway so now between the two I will have a short bushwhacking rifle/ back-up rifle in the both calibers I hunt with.

I have a 308 Ruger compact, I also have a Frontier in 358 [my favorite hunting rifle] both 16 1/2" they both shoot MOA I don't find them overly load but definatly would not go any shorter.

After some thought, decided to up it to a 16 in barrel. Also bought a Sightron 3 1-7 to go along with. Now just have to wait for the work to be done. Just shot a friends BLR in 308 on the weekend. Was an old version with the sling swivel on the front part of the barrel. Nice compact rifle, but kicked like a mule. Hopefully a heavy contour barrel will alleviate some of the recoil.

If you think a 20 inch barrelled .308 BLR kicks like a mule you might want to forget about a 16 inch barrelled .308. Muzzle blast is a big component of perceived recoil and a 16 inch .308 will be LOUD. From a performance standpoint you might as well get .30/30 Winchester 94 with a 20 inch barrel. Not a great deal of difference in velocity from a 16 inch .308 and much more pleasant to shoot.
