308 bolt in a 223

Any reason I can't put a 308 bolt in a 223 Rem 700 action (I think it will fit but too tired to open up the safe to check). I'm looking for a donor action for a 6.5x47 or 6mmBR so need the 308 bolt face.

No reason at all. I have 3 rem 700sa, 2 share the same bolt. I didn't want to open up a second bolt to wsm specs so I just use the one bolt for 2 rifles keeping the original in 308 for another project somewhere down the road.

If you convert your 223 to a 308 or 6BR do you want to trade mag followers? I am looking for a 223 mag follower and have a 308 mag follower currently. The fricken thing won't feed with the wrong follower in the mag.

I don't believe it will. Pretty sure the raceways are narrower on the 223

The SA bolts are the same size, but the bolt face is smaller.

LA is the same way. I have a 338 LM, .338 WM, 338-06, 30-06, 270 (all model 700s) and all the bolts fit in each other. Thay may not work as the bolt face may be different & head space may not be the same, but they all fit.

Remington builds them this way, they keep 2 different bolt bodies, long and short. Afterwards they are fitted to the rifle once the barrel is installed & they do the chamber.

As shooter pointed out....... This may have been a question more suitable in gunsmithing, but no harm no foul.

The rails of a .223 sized receiver are slightly different when compared with those of a .308 family version.
Bolts will swap, doesn't mean that lug engagement is uniform, let alone headspace.
Of course, two or more rifles can be built to share a bolt.

A 223 action will not feed a 308 case. The bottom of the action is too small. The bolts will swap providing both the action and the bolts have the 'anti bind' groove or both don't have it.

HS Precision solves this by swapping magazines as well as bolts on their switch calibers

I'm just wondering if a .223 action rails will help cycle 7.62x39 cases better than the .308 action rails. Anyone try it?
I will probably have to bend out the BDL mag a little and reshape or use a modified .308 follower.
