i found this load shot well for me

168 A-MAX
varget 46.3 gr
WLR primers
Remington Brass
2.928 OAL
2688 fps

So I assume with a 2.928 COL, you are single feeding and not using the magazine, or are you using a longer than 2.85" short action ?

Why do you want to load more then one at a time into the rifle? For most TR/F class events it is single loading only. Precision/Sniper matches can load via magazine.
I have never shot 168 A-Max bullets, but I do know 168 Sierra's will not work at 1000 yards.

Yes, I single feed mine...i find u get better accuracy when seat them on or just touching the lands...but experiment and try different loads seating depths and see what works let me know how it works for u...good luck and remember have fun and be safe:)

That was a budget build?    Nice rifle!

Hmm..yeah, I thought about that too when I was done! But....

I figure this setup new (for Rem VSF, TPS rings/bases, and bolt mods) would run at least $1380. As-built and using a "spare/free" action, I spent $830, so I figure I saved $550 over buying new, and if I skipped the extras (using old rings and bases and skipping the BO bolt mods:evil: ), I would have saved $840 over new  .

So, in the end, I think I did pretty well :D !

Bushnell 4200 6-24X50 T, and load update

Looky what came in this week - the new Bushnell 4200 6-24x50 :p . The only one so far into P&D - I was first on the list:rockOn: . The scope is solid and heavy and I like it. Tactical knobs are really nice. Side parallax seems to work well.

I will try it out at the range this weekend with some new 175 SBK's loads I made up, and will keep working on the Varget and 168 Vmax I have been shooting into 5/8" . So far so good though, first session out I was able to dial in my leupy and put hits on the 600 m gong in about 10 km/h cross wind. Barrels getting close to 100 rounds. :dancingbanana:

Nice rig!

I love Amax bullets and had great success with 178's in a 1:11"
...mind telling me/us ballpark $ on the bushnell? What reticle does it have?

Cheers!

700-ish plus change at P&D. Mildot reticle.

Thank you, that's certainly better then the 28 the previous version of this scope had. - dan

LMAO. +1. Do you suppose they might have finally got it right? It's a far cry better than the 1" tube's 26 moa but it's truly not up to par with other 30mm tube offerings from competing manufacturers. FWIW, Bushnell's site lists the scope at 50 moa. Wishfull thinking?

Should be fine to 1,000 yds. with a 20 moa base.

I agree. The 45 OA is still limiting IMO. However, I have it set up with 20 MOA base, so that helps. I had the scope out yesterday for some load testing. The adjustments are accurate (no box test yet) and it seems very clear at about 16-18 X and lower, and is comparable to my VXIII at 14x. But upwards to 20-24 x, the 4200 is not as clear as I'd like, however it was overcast and I am not sure what to expect of such high magnification, which is new to me. So far my impressions are very positive.

I'll be back at the range in the next couple days to test more loads. The 44 grains of varget/175 SMK's shot into one ragged hole, and the 45.5 grains of varget/175 SMK's look very promising at just a hair over 1/2 MOA. The barrel seems to be settling in, which I am happy to see after "breaking in" the barrel in with 30 consecutive rounds before it's first scrub. I can't wait to find a pet load and start the serious trigger time at long range. :canadaFlag:
