I've been shooting Federal Power-shock ammo with a 150 gr. bullet out of my recently acquired .308 Win. Since then I've been told by some that I should be shooting 165 gr. bullets and told by others that I should use 180 gr. I know that every rifle can be different, but what is the "rule of thumb" bullet weight for a .308 deer rifle (no moose).

165's seem to be the best all-around bullet in .308's. when you run the numbers you see it gives you the best ballence of balistics and down range energy

I would use whatever groups the best in your rifle. I favour the 165 gr due to a variety of game encountered and the flatter trajectory compared to the 180gr. For a deer only round, the 150gr will be all you need.

i've always only used winchester silver tips in 180, because i hunt moose as well and like to use the same ammo, but out of 5 deer (3 bucks) 4 dropped in their tracks and the other went less than 40 yards. Not sure if this helps at all.

Just deer? 150 is plenty.

165 gives you better BC on average if you're looking for long shots, and yeah it's probably the best overall bullet weight for the .308, but it's in no way necessary for killing deer.

IME 165's as a general rule with regards to the 308s. That said if the 150s shoot well they are more then adequate for deer hunting. 150, 165 or 180s will all do the job just let the rifle do the talking, that is what most of those who say shoot this or that are doing but their rifle/situation is not yours.

If the 150s shoot well in your .308, use them.

If it was a moose or elk the answer would be a heavier/custom bullet, but it's only a deer for cryin out loud! Use whatever "hunting" bullet you want from 150gr to 200gr.

Up till this year, I used 150gr RN in my .308 and they didn't bounce off anything!

I've used 150gr. Speer grand slams in my BLR 308.

Killed every thing from deer, elk, and moose....All dead and in the freezer:)

Out of a .308win I have used 150, 165, and 180's. All had the same result - dead deer.;) My Ruger really likes the 165gr, so that's what I have used the most. However, I may try a 125gr Nosler this year.

Try them all and see what your rifle likes.

Good luck and have fun.

Find out what your gun shoots best and stick with it for deer.Half the fun of owning a gun is experimenting with different loads.I found that my old 760 Rem pump liked the 150 gr Rem core lokts so that's what was used for deer. When moose hunting I stepped up to Winchester 180 gr silvertips. Have fun & good luck. Cheers Bac4

Pretty hard to beat 165gr bullets; if you handload I'd pick from these: Hornady BTSP, IB or SST; Sierra GameKing; Nosler Accubond. If you're buying factory I'd just buy Remington CorLokt's.

I'm going with 165gr IB's this year, but in the past I used 180gr. If you aren't reloading, go with the 150gr, as there isn't as much selection in the 165gr weight in factory ammo.
