.308 bullet weigth for deer?

I have been having trouble with the federal .308 150grain expanding. Barely makes a visible hole in a coyote, and very little damage to deer. I have had better luck with the winchester power points, always great expansion.

I use 180 grain balistic tips now... probably overkill, I wish they were bonded.
 
Heavier bullets give better penetration on moose and will kill a deer just fine and cause less meat loss.

A standard hunting load from remington, federal or winchester is adequate, although for moose a premium bullet would not hurt.

As has been said here, each rifle has its preferences. Some willshoot both 165 and 180s into the same size groups and another will show a strong preference. Go with the preferance.

The "preference' is not just the bullet weight, but the brand of ammo and bullet type, too. Once you know what works,go buy a few more boxes.

Yes, I do belive it fragmented, and I was not surprised, either. I don't know what weight bullet would have been better, but maybe my 444 with a 300 would have been better.

The bush was in front of the deer. very light bush - Icould see the deer clearly. It was 125 yards away, so 150gr bullet was slower than 2750.

When we skinned the deer it looked like it had been shot with a shotgun.

One of these days I will put a sheet of plastic (Liberal election signs are best) behind a christmas tree and shoot with severl weights and calibers.

I will put sheet 10 feet behind so I can mesure fragmentation and deflection.

I expect that anything up to a 12 ga slug has problems. but we will see.
 
Ive seen Elk and moose dropped with a 150gr bullet and am a solid believer in shot placement.bullet weights should be a matter of personel preference:sniper:
 
I think the 165 is the all around bullet weight for the 308, if your rifle will shoot them. The best compromise of trajectory, and energy, premiums aside.

150's are all you really need for deer, however, the 165 is more versatile.

I really like the 168 grain Nosler Combined Technologies bullet in my .308 and 30-06. However i have only killed game with it in the 06. I am sure it will be the same great result in the .308
